We came to the Seman and were offered a larger room with four twin beds. The price was not too bad, but I expected that the front desk manager would at least bargain a little especially since the season was the slow season. The lighting was pretty bad all over the hotel, and although the carpets were a nice touch, they didn't seem to have been cleaned properly in a while. The staff is friendly and responsive -- a good thing since there were quite a few times we needed issues addressed with our room. One issue was the hot water wasn't working at first, and someone had to come up and turn on some hidden valves. (worked fine after that) Another was that a few times over the course of our stay the circuit breaker to the bathroom electric had to be switched back on. It was just starting to get cold, and the heat was on, but just barely. There is an internet modem/router in the room, but no internet connection. There is parking out back, but no one lets you know about a parking fee, until you try to leave, and the parking attendant closes the gate on me as I'm leaving and just says -- "10 kuai". I was able to get it down to just 5 kuai per night, but still that's 3 kuai more than what it should be. The location is fantastic -- across the street is a neat little Pakistani restaurant and they were very friendly and the food is good. and of course being in Kashgar the smell of freshly baked nan permeates your senses as soon as you walk out the door at any given time. There are several 'dukan' (shops) nearby to get whatever you may need as far as snacks or food. It is a busy intersection, so just beware with children crossing the street there.

Room Tip: If you're traveling with a family -- the rooms in the back are roomier.

Service dreadful. Staff disinterested and dismissive. We put laundry in and had to ask repeatedly to get it back. Breakfast appalling. Dont do it. Go next door to Johns cafe. Decor horrid and the stench of cigarettes in most rooms.
Never again

Yes, this hotel is certainly grimy and rundown. But there's nowhere else in Kashi I would have preferred to stay. Not least because of the pastel pink and baby blue painted room - felt like sleeping inside a kitsch wedding cake.
The rooms themselves vary greatly in cleanliness and size, so it's worth checking a few out before you make your choice. We had rooms on the 1st floor which had newly installed baths. The sheets are clean. The floor not so much.
The housekeeping wasn't the most thorough, but for what you pay, these rooms are fine. The A/C worked, though the refrigerator didn't. Not a big problems since it was nicer to have a drink at John's cafe, located inside the hotel. It is very friendly, with great food for breakfast, and snacks and drinks at all hours.
Abdul Wahab at Old Road Tours, whose office is also located inside the hotel, is really friendly and helpful (as opposed to the hotel staff who can be pretty gruff). He is full of local information, and his tours can be tailored to suit your time frame and wishes. Abdul helped arranged a day tour for us and also offered us advice on carpet buying - all in a very low-key, no-pressure way, which we really appreciated.
Despite the negatives I've listed about the hotel itself, I recommend it for its location and from the sense of history you get from this place. You need to keep your sense of humor when staying here though - don't expect luxury.

This place is run down and smells faintly of boiled cabbage. It is also oozing with character, so as long as you set your expectations accordingly it can make for a pleasant stay.

It's well located, quiet and fairly priced. I had a room overlooking a leafy courtyard away from the city bustle. The bed linen was clean and while that bathroom was falling apart at least it was clean. Thankfully they provide slippers as I didn't fancy walking on the sticky carpet in bare feet.

I'm sure there are better and more modern hotels in Kashgar but I think it is unlikely you will find one as unique as this. I stayed in August 2011.

Also of note is that Abdul Wahab tours has its office just off the hotel lobby. When I arrived I organised a guide through them to take me on a four day trip along the Karakoram highway to lake Karakul, staying with local families in yurts and hiking in the Muztagh Ata region. Highly recommended.

The hotel is really rundown. The rooms were satisfactory. There was a bad smell in the lobby. The room was on the third floor and there were no elevators. The Air Conditioning was good. The shower was a hand held. John's restaurant was just downstairs and had excellent western food at low prices and good service

Room Tip: No elevator and rooms upstairs

We stayed at Seman Hotel a long time while waiting for our package that would arrive there. The only reason stayed there and kept staying there is because it is the cheapest option for a double room with a private bathroom. There is however nothing athmospheric about this hotel. We stayed at the right side of the hotel. The room was ok, the beds where hard and the room was dirty. Sheets where clean but towel smelled like sigarette smoke. The bathroom needed updating. Our toilet broke the first day and didnt flush and was clogged a lot. The head of our shower fell down and if the head was on it was spraying in the toilet instead of on the person showering so we left it off. We had hot water maybe four times in the two weeks we stayed there and asking the staff to fix it didnt help. A lot of noise during the night and very early morning and we even had security knock on our door twice after midnight because we didnt pay for that night yet. Staff was sometimes friendly sometimes rude and spoke hardly any english. Very helpfull people at Wahab travel agency. John's cafe was closed. No internet connection only at Wahabs for 5 yuan/hour. For washing our clothes we had to pay a buck load of money, 10 yuan per average piece. The location is ok but the old town is a bit of a walk and there you can find the most cheap eats. There are some good restaurant around the Seman. Chinese food is mostly more expensive than Ugur food.

I think the hostels in town are much better options (later I found out when barganing the prices for a private double are a little cheaper there than at Seman). They have good athmosphere, you can meet fellow travellers there and have a drink in the bar. We spend most our time at one of them since w ecould use the internet for free and do our laundry for 10 yuan per load including powder!

A good surprise as I read some averages advices about this hotel. I slept on the left side of the hotel, near the cafe, closed at night. The bed are ok, the room not big but,so quiet. It is possible to catch the wifi from the cafe from some rooms. The only bad thing is the bathroom which need some fresh painting! The hotel is in front of very good restaurants.
