Kashgar Old Town Youth Hostel

Don't expect too much here. My husband and I just stayed there. We had our own room. On arrival we had to clean our own room and make up our bed.

The bathrooms are shared which was a problem in the middle of the night. We had to go downstairs to use them and it was nice and cold at that time.

We thought it was bad value as we moved hotel and got one for a similar price with an ensuite bathroom, heating in the room and much cleaner in a similar location

The positives for many travelers would be the close proximity to the main mosque and that many backpackers stay here, so they can have a talk about their experiences

Room Tip: Don't expect much from the rooms. They are so basic

The location is very central, though it is a bit difficult to find on your first time there.

Beds and rooms are very basic, toilets are dimly lit. But overall, the place is very atmospheric, with a great open courtyard when travellers get together and share stories of their overland trips. Actually one of the nicest hostel I've stayed in, in terms of creating a sense of community. Great place to meet new people for onward travel.

Ah wen, one of the receptionist, always has a smile on her face, making everyone feel welcomed.

The location is excellent! Very central and convenient, you can walk to the Id Kah Great Mosque in 5 minutes and there's a lively night market across the Mosque every night. We love hanging out in the yard and exchanging travel stories/info with fellow travelers. You could sleep in the yard at night for a even cheaper price $30/first night then $25/night.

My friend and I stayed at the Kashgar Old City Hostel for a night after a 2 day trip to Karakul Lake and Tashkurgan. It was acceptable, with a decent bunk, though there was no air conditioning and limited plugs. There was also only 1 shower to be shared amongst 12 people. 6 bunks per room. It is a no frills place, you pay for what you get. However, I chose this hostel because of its close proximity to the ancient town which we wanted to visit the following day. It is also a walkable distance to the Kashgar Bazaar.

We stayed at Kashgar Old City Hostel for two nights, with a third night arranged by the hostel staff to go up the Karakoram Hwy to Karakul Lake & Tashkurgan. The hostel was very well-equipped - washing machines, small bar, information for China travel, an iPad you could rent by the hour, computers, wireless, etc - and the staff was very friendly and helpful throughout the stay. We had heard some complaints about the mattresses being hard (a typical issue in China), but before we arrived they had added new and better mattresses to all the beds. We stayed in the dorms (RMB 35/night as it was still off season), which were surprisingly quiet considering how many people were in the hostel at that time. It's a great place to meet fellow travelers and swap travel stories before heading off to your next location. Just down the street is a lot of great street food, and the main square is five minutes away on foot.

Don't miss the trip up the Karakoram Hwy. We were only two people (RMB 1200 for a car), but the hostel staff gathered a group of interested travelers in a van so we only had to pay RMB 280 for two full days of travel. A great deal and one of the best parts of our Xinjiang travels.

We visited Kashgar in August, during Ramadan. It was hot and if you were courteous enough to respect local customs, you did not eat or drink in public until sundown. Which was difficult. Very difficult. I think the only way we did it was by enjoying a morning stroll through the Old City, going back to Kashgar Old City Hostel to eat lunch and nap, and then going out to dinner again.

When we went, it was a few days after the 2011 riots, so security around Kashgar was tight. This hostel was a good place to meet people to exchange stories and tips, as many were headed to Karakul or Pakistan or Kyrgyzstan or etc.

This hostel was our base for 5+ days, and it was a bargain. We took the private room upstairs and it was lovely. It has a shared bath, but it was empty so it felt like our own.

The courtyard downstairs provides a nice excuse to be lazy on warm days. Buy some fruit, some local bread, a cold beer, and relax. The staff is friendly. The location is very close to the market.

All in all, a memorable experience.
