It is half an hour's driving from Chengdu to the museum. Not too many people. Sanxingdui Museum is composed of two major halls. The first one shows the potteries and some gold. The second one shows mainly the bronze. The bronze trees are displayed in the first hall at the end. My friend told me at the Terro-cotta army museum in Xi'an, there were only dirt statues of people and horses, the bronze tree is truely amazing. The giant mask looks like a copy made later, but there is a picture of unearthing it over 20 years ago.

Over half of our visit time were spent in the second hall, where we have seen the amazing golden mask on the bronze head. There are a lot of beautiful bronze heads in different sizes. They also have a big bronze bird head and a big bronze snake. And I believe I saw something like a steering wheel. I haven't visited too many museums but this is the best museum so far for me.

There is a teahouse and restaurant beside the museum. We sipped a little drink under the scorching sun and left. This visit takes about two to three hours.

The museum at Sanxingdui is breathtaking - there were 3 exhibition buildings when I visited in Feb 2013, with enough signage in the first, becoming much better in the 2nd and 3rd. The bronze heads are the main attraction, but there's much more too. Easiest way to get there is to arrange a hotel taxi.

This site has some of the most interesting finds on any continent. The Shu culture had incredible skill at working bronze, and to a lesser extent gold and jade. Some of the bronze work looks like art deco and the sophistication of the designs is amazing. We often found it difficult to think of this being done between 1500-2000 BCE.

The Comprehensive Gallery gives a good overview of the culture and location of Sanxingdui, as well as the range of artisan work that has been found. Some unique pottery forms, beautiful jade work, and the signature high quality bronzes are stunning. The Bronze Gallery is just a triumph of beautiful work and provides interpretation of the figures you see in the artwork. If you go to this site, we strongly recommend you rent the automatic guide. It is certainly worth the $2-3 charged. Commentary is very good, providing insight that is more than the signage.

We have visited archeological sites on four continents and this is certainly in the top ten. It isn't easy to get to Sanxingdui (we took bus), but we found it easy to get a taxi back to Chengdu for about 200RMB ($33). Whatever it takes, it is worth the trip.

The museum is built in a vaste beautiful park where one can stroll, have pic nic etc The Museum houses a collection of relics of the Shang Dynasty (16th-11th century BC). except the invaluable pieces made out of bronze, jade, bone and gold there are a number of masks archaeologists still search their origin.

This msueum is five star and definitely worth theexcursion fromChengdu. It displays magnificently the artifacts from this ancien tculture that were excavated in the area. The bronze religious masks are exceptional. We are talking about a civilizatoin from way before the common era. You will be fascinated by the extent of the knowledge that existed at the time these people inhabited China so many, many years ago. After seeing this you definitely must visit the Jinsha Museum in Chengdu itself as it is probably the site where the Sanxingdui people moved after unexplainably leaving this area of their habitation. The Sanxingdui museum is extremely modern and attractive with beautiful gardens around it. The museum has an excellent restaurant located within the facility and a very fine gift shop.
