This was probably a very nice area before it was opened to tourists. I've gone twice and luckily not during holidays.

As the other reviewers said, the scenery is beautiful. The steam rising off the water in the early morning is stunning. But it's hard to see the beauty among the brightly colored banners and people purposefully throwing beer bottles in the water while trying to hit the fish. If you don't have an interpreter or at least a pocket dictionary, you won't get much done.

Pros: Beautiful natural scenery.
Relaxing and very quiet at night.
Barbecue restaurant next to hotel was chill and had fairly tasty food.
Lots to do and explore.

Cons: Beauty is covered by Chinese kitsch.
Hotel is disgusting. Toilet leaked on floor. Carpet had never been properly cleaned. Shower was just a shower head coming from the hot water heater.
Constant hassle from "monks" and vendors.
Pay parking despite shelling out for tickets and the hotel.
The free things to do do not have adequate signs, so usually people end up following the crowd to all the things that cost money.

Tips: Wander on trails and you'll find lots to do for free.
If you really want to do something, wait until most people have left and bargain. We rode the small ferry from one side of the park to the other for half price. We were offered free rides on the zip-lines at one point but were too leery of their safety.
Bargain with the hotel staff. The hotel is usually only full during large holidays. We got a suite (two bedrooms, one bath) the first time and two king rooms another time for about half price because there were only about 100 other people in the park those days.

This national park in Dongbei or north-east China, halfway between Dalian and Dandong, has an AAAA rating and it's well-deserved. I took 450 photos and 400 were fantastic. The scenery is breath-taking. The cable car to a mountain peak was thrilling. A beautiful, clean, clear, green river winds through a gorgeous gorge surrounded by mountain peaks.

The mountain and rivers are beautiful, but then you add brightly colored games, crossings and rides to get around the park which really detracts from the natural beauty of the place. Although the kids enjoyed the many different ways to cross the river, just bring lots of money with you because everything is a fee. The area is famous for their Chickens, so stop by a local farm and you can get a fresh chicken plucked for your dinner table.

My wife and I spent a day and one night at the park in Bingyu Valley in April 2011. Due to 1st May Labor day, the park was quite crowded. We were almost the only non-Chinese in there. After arranging a reservation from Dalian for a night at the park (as suggested by Lonely Planet guide) with the help of our Dalian hotel staff, we took an early direct bus to Bingyu park entrance. On site, it was no longer possible to be understood in English and without prior reservation and several notes prepared in Chinese, I wonder how we would have been understood. The room available at the park was quite rudimentary (we took a three-bed room in the main building because other rooms available were too rustic cabin-like shacks). Our room was simplistic with no hot water and quite expensive at 480 RMB for what it was. The scenery was beautiful and some paths were very pleasant to walk by away from the crowd. The crowd disappeared around 7:00PM as only a few people remained in the park for the night. Having to take a small boat operated by the park staff to get in and out of the park, we had to wait for the first boat to start its day on the following morning to get to the road waiting for a bus to pass by. Fortunately, while waiting for a bus to come by, someone offered a ride (45 min) to the town (Zhuanghe) which we accepted after reducing the negotiated price for the ride (fromm 100 to 60 RMB). There we succeede to take one of several buses back to Dalian. All in all, an interesting experience for visiting a park not as wild and quiet as expected but quite nice and different. Available information on Internet or in written guides is scarce, incomplete (most often non-existent) and we strongly recommend a good preparation for non-Chines-speaking tourists.
