If you are in Pingyao, then you should visit this town. Unlike Pingyao, which is totally touristy, this town remains residential and unimproved, so you get a better sense of what things were like in the Ming dynasty in this area. The tunnel network underneath town has been partially restored and provides an interesting insight into the ancient defenses. We hired an English-speaking tour guide at the ticket booth. About two hours are enough to cover the sights.

The people in the village went about their daily lives as tourists walked about their town. The ancient village was as interesting as the underground tunnels and beautiful cliffside setting.

We arranged a day trip to Wang Family Courtyard, followed by a lunch nearby and then on to Zhangbi Underground Castle through the Harmony Guesthouse in Pingyao. We went with a small group in a comfortable people carrier. Sorry I cannot remember the cost but do recall it being worth it for two of us rather than arrange private transport.
By the time we arrived at Zhangbi Underground Castle the weather was very wet and this undoubtedly put a “dampener” on the tour. We had a tour guide to take us around the town, coming in and out of the historic elements which remain above ground. Then we went down in to the 1400 year old tunnels. These were interesting. I would not say that they are inaccessible buut you would want to have average mobility or it would be awkward.
The entire tour gave a very good impression of the defences and a sense for the threats that existed which required such a level of precaution to be taken. However to be honest arriving here in heavy rain in the afternoon having driven from the Wang Family Courtyard, we felt we probably didnt experience the site in the best weather or form.

The Zhangbi Fortress encompassing the ancient town of Zhangbi Cun is an amazing feat of architecture and engineering. This lesser known historical attraction has many kilometers of tunnels in three layers under the town which were designed and built as a military defense position. The fortress has thick ground walls surrounding the town and high walls along both sides of the main street. This would allow residents to close gates in the high walls allowing intruders to access only the main street between the gates. Our tour guide, Jonathan Zhang (www.pingyaotravelguide.com), provided a tour of both the tunnels and the equally interesting town above. I recommend a trip should you find yourself in the Pingyao area of the Shanxi Provence.
