We stopped at Lake Placid on our way to see the Barron Gorge power station. As we parked the car we saw a goanna amongst the trees. Further into the area around the lake there was a large sign warning about crocodiles in the water and next to it a set of steps leading into the water? By some large rocks there were 2 men about to dive in and when we asked about the crocodiles they said "Local knowledge". It looks beautiful but I do wonder about what may lurk beneath the surface.

Barron Falls is a stop along the Kuranda Railway and Skyway, although you can drive up there as well. I saw this by doing the rail and able car. Its a magnificent waterfall, although I would love to see it during the wet season as it would be just gushing with water. Great stop, for a relaxing day.

We took a day trip to Kuranda using our hire car and I wished I had spent two days there. There's many things to say about Kuranda but the Barron Gorge is definitely a highlight close to Kuranda. Go and enjoy it.. There's a great walk to the Barron Falls Lookout for a spectacular view. The walk is well managed and safe with boardwalk and canopy boardwalk areas to add interest.

Our day tour from Cairns allowed us to see this stunning piece of scenery from both sides.

We traveled by train up the mountain to Kuranda, which stopped for 10 minutes at a lookout, with amazing views of the gorge.

You could just stand there for ages, exploring with your eyes, the many rock pools that littered the cliff face of the falls. It really was a breath taking sight.

On the way back from Kuranda to Cairns, we traveled on the Sky Rail, which was one of the most amazing things I have ever done, riding for miles and miles in a small gondola above a huge real living breathing rain forest!

The Sky Rail had a stop on the other side of the gorge, with a nice easy board walk through forest, to the edge of the gorge.

I sooooooo would love to spend a day climbing the cliff and siting/swimming in some of the many rock pools.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, I can see real value in hiring a car and exploring more of the area. Though, if you are strapped for time (we only had 4 nights in Cairns), then the day trip is a great way to see the gorge and get to sample so many other things like the train/sky rail in the one day. It was great being looked after so well and not having to worry about anything :)

Great sight and a fantastic day!!

Very prehistoric beautiful gorge, best seen during periods of high rainfall as you get the full effect of the waterfall! One of those places on earth that truly takes your breath away. Recommend to hire a car and visit some of the other beautiful spots in this area rather than taking the skyrail. You have the choice of where you want to stop off and for how long if you have your own transport. Definitely worth visiting, just for the sheer beauty of it!
