Rounceval House Hotel
Reviewed April 20, 2011

I have to visit Yate for work and the Rounceval is a welcome sanctuary while away from home. The owner is always friendly and the hotel is very homely. I usually despise staying in hotels but this has a much better atmosphere than the typical faceless corporate sleep factories. The only minor gripe is that it's impossible to connect to the WiFi from the 3rd floor rooms but it's not a deal breaker.

We took a chance of a late booking here this week. We have stayed before and have never been disappointed. Mark, the owner remembers guests, is always welcoming and runs a good "ship". The only room he had available had the bath en-suite (literally). The only small problem was the size of the loo. But hey not a big problem.

We'll be back.

We stayed here as we were visiting the Handmade and Vintage fair in Chipping Sodbury and this was the No 1 hotel in the town on Tripadvisor.
We also went into Bath which isn't too far away by car.

We stayed for 2 nights in the superior double room (no.5). Its a lovely big room, spotlessly clean with great amenities .....hairdryer/water/cookies/tea and coffee etc.
We were surprised to walk through a door to find a lounge area...which was nice...however we didn't use it...it would have been nice to have an extra t.v in this room or a little book shelf with books/board games.

The Bathroom was lovely....with a good amount of mirrors (hotels never seem to have anough mirrors!!)

There were some bad points about the room:
Minor ones were: no views.....there are 3 windows and you can't see out of any of them.

Low beams and doors......this really is a minor point...as i know it adds to the character of the hotel, but it could annoy some tall people.

The ones we struggled with are:
The rooms are so noisy!! we could hear everything and struggled to sleep because of this. We were hoping for extra sleep because we have two small children, but was woken up at 6 each day. The hotel could do with putting some carpet on the stairs!!

Also the bed was quite uncomfortable....i think it needs replacing, it was a bit lopsided. Both me and my hubby had really bad backs walking around Bath the next day and we are only in our late 20's!!

The tv only had a few channels and we were surprised to find out it didn't even have 1, 2,3,4 or 5!!!

And breakfast was early: 7-9am ......which actually turned out fine as we were up at 6 with the noise!!!! Maybe thats why they've chosen those times.

Good points though: The hotel is beautifully clean. The breakfast was yummy....and even a nice veggie cooked breakfast for me. There was some good information at reception and even a bar if you wanted a drink. It is right in the town and has its own carpark.

Not sure if i would stay here again, as when away i like a good nights sleep and a little lie in if away from our boys. Even if the hotel wasn't noisy, we would have had to been up early for breakfast.

Chipping sodbury itself is quite nice, only worth coming for half a day though or for an event, or just staying in if going somewhere near by. I think i'd rather stay in Bath next time though.
There were a couple of lovely little gifty shops and we ate in a nice italian restaurant at the end of the town. We had a lovely lunch in a deli called Hamptons.

Our trips to Bath are always good!! But thats another trip advisor review!!

I would recommend this hotel to a friend...but i'd have to warn them of the noise and t.v first!!

We stayed here for one night during Badminton. Between us we had 3 rooms all large, very clean with good bathrooms. No evening meals are served but there is a perfectly adequate Italian next door that Mark the hotelier booked in advance for us. Breakfast was delicious. We will definitely return.

We stayed here for one night in a family room with our daughters aged 6 and 4, this was perfect and had a separate room for them within the room with 2 single beds as well as our double in the main bedroom and loads of space (although was top floor so bumped heads on beams a couple of times!!) We were going to a friends party and they live in the area, we have stayed at this hotel before when visiting the same friends and we have loved it both times, had a different room last time but still wonderful. Decorated very simply and neutral but luxurious too. Staff excellent, friendly and helpful. Breakfast wonderful, would highly recommend!

This is the third time I have stayed at Rounceval and it never fails to disappoint. Very clean rooms, ample size and comfortable beds. The staff are friendly and you dont need to set your alarms for the morning as the smell of cooked breakfast wafts through the house waking you up and jolly nice it is too. Would definately go back.

This is a charming hotel, with good facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. The rooms were spotlessly clean, the breakfast was excellent, and we were very comfortable during our stay. I cannot praise the service highly enough; the gentleman who runs the hotel really put himself out for us, and all the staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful. I would make a point of staying there again if I were in the area, and have already booked a return visit.
