“What a great find!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

After a wonderful trip last year to Burgundy last year my partner and I decided to continue our tour of the French wine country and go to Bordeaux along with another couple. We particularly wanted to visit Pauillac and using trip advisor stumbled across Chateau Pomys in the pretty village if Saint Estephe. On arrival we visited the winery and tasted and purchased some local wine. We also bought some local cheese and charcuterie being sold in the winery and sat out on the front grass to enjoyed our purchases along with some afternoon sunshine. We borrowed the glasses from the hotel however they did advise that the winery and hotel are quite seperate and purchases from the winery cannot really be consumed out in the back gardens of the hotel. This made sense when we eventually had drinks in the chateaus gardens and a 4E bottle of rose from the winery is 18E in the hotel. Just as a suggestion it would make more sense to interlink them. The hotel has beautiful grounds, great size and comfortable rooms (we were lucky to have views of the vineyards and their gardens) and friendly staff. We were only staying for one night and after reading good reviews on TA about the dinners we decided to give it a try. Prices are reasonable and the food was good so it did not disappoint. Would definitely recommend a visit here.

Coming from California, We have always had a desire to visit the wine country in Bordeaux France, which is the gold standard for wine production. Instead of finding a hotel in the city of Bordeaux, we decided to locate in the middle of wine country at Chateau Pomys in Saint-Estephe. Chateau Pomys is an absolutely beautiful chateau-hotel, with friendly staff and its own vineyard and private label wine. Our room on the third floor overlooked vineyards as far as the eye can see, as well as having a view of the Gironde estuary. At the suggestion of the hotel staff we went to the visitor center in nearby Paullac. The Visitor Center personnel were extremely friendly and helpful in arranging tours at various wineries thoughout the Medoc area, which made our visit to the area very special. Dinners at the Chateau Pomys are quite reasonably priced under French standards and we looked forwarded to our meals each night. When you start-out each dinner with Escargot in garlic sauce paired with the Chateau Pomys private label red wine, combined with great service in a quiet dining room, and only a minute from your bedroom, life does not get any better. Wifi was free.

We stayed during a recent trip round France and this was one of many chateau's we stayed in. Though not making excuses, Pomy's should not be judged simply by standards of hotels, its like staying in someones home albeit a very old and grand one smack bang in the middle of the most breautiful countryside WITH the bonus of having its own winery. My wife and I loved it and consider it a great experience. Accomodation options in that area are limited and if you want to stay out of the tourist vibe of Paulliac, Pomy's is a fantastic alternative.

Room Tip: Rear garden facing room has best view of vineyards etc

We only stayed overnight as we were rushing through this area unfortunately, but found the room to be simple but very comfortable and clean. Nearby dining options were somewhat limited.

Sadly, this might have been an entirely different review had it not been for the following circumstances. Upon checking into our room, my friends and I noticed an abundance of long black hairs (over a dozen) on the bathroom floor, hanging out of the trash basket and in the tub area as well as the separate toilet room...which also had a dead fly on the floor. My friend, who was born in France but is now an American citizen, went downstairs and asked the front desk clerk (much more politely than I would have) if our bathroom could be cleaned. At first they were very responsive and a man (hotel manager?) went directly to the room while we continued our day of sightseeing. But when we returned, the hair was still on the bathroom floor, hanging out of the trash basket and in the tub area...and only the fly and hair had been removed from the room with the toilet. My friend went back down to the lobby and asked the same man if he would please clean the hair from our bathroom (again, much more graciously than I would have). His response (and I don't speak French but could tell by body language and the look on his face that he was insulted) was to huff upstairs in such a way as to say, "this is such an annoyance." Once we got to the room and showed him the evidence his attitude went from haughtiness to embarrassment and he finally had it cleaned up. Of course by then, my confidence in the cleanliness of the hotel was shot. That aside, the “chateau” was charming, and the grounds very beautiful. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant which was decent, but nothing to rave about. I’m not sure if I would choose this hotel again. I suppose it would depend on what else was available. Also, be forewarned, there is no elevator.

We spent the last two nights of a long European trip (mainly Spain and Portugal) here before flying out from Bordeaux. We chose to stay in the countryside rather than in the city and were well rewarded. We had a comfortable, enjoyable stay in a delightful setting. We enjoyed a splendid dinner out on the terrace and had a private wine-tasting of several vintages. Breakfast was simple but totally adequate. We drove to St. Emilion for a day and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Pomys has a nice chateau/country house hotel feel. Not overly grand, but it feels the part. The second floor 'superior' room, and it's bed, were huge, with the bathroom and WC in two separate en-suite rooms. The room spanned two windows, with views over a lovely, if informal, garden with vines beyond and the Gironde estuary in the distance. The staff were very friendly and helpful - not at all impersonal as we had thought might be the case in a "chateau" hotel. The breakfast was just average, but the dinners were excellent, and on the Friday were bringing in some of the locals. We tried both of the in-house clarets (Ch St Estephe and Ch Pomys) in a couple of different vintages. All were good value.

Room Tip: All rooms will be quiet. Best views from the rear.
