Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: This great little award-winning and family-friendly Museum contains two fun and fact-packed biographical galleries, the fantabulous interactive Story Centre and a sunny courtyard. Situated in Great Missenden where Roald Dahl lived for over 36 years, it was created as a home for the author’s archive (which visitors can see on our regular tours) and as a place to inspire creativity and a love of reading in children, about which Roald Dahl was passionate.

“Better than I expected!”

We took the kids here and came away feeling very satisfied. We learnt a great deal about an amazing story teller and had a great time overall. Only watch outs were that parking was a nightmare, we had to use the local train station car park and the cafe was very busy and not very well organised. Didn't detract from a good day out!

“Fantabulous but short!”

We went to the Roahl Doahl museum with 4 children, 11,10,8 and 6. There was a lot of interesting facts about the author and his writing shed but there was little about the inspiration bashing the books he wrote. The village of Great Missenden is lovely and there are lots of lovely shops and a woodland trail and also a village walk to see his grave. This is well worth visiting and my 6 year old was really inspired by the whole day. I would say that for older children there is little to do but for children under 10 it is definetly worth going. Parking is limited so get there by 10 and the Twit cafe have great cakes. I love Roahl DAhl and despite the museum being small, it was a fascinating insight to a much loved author.

“Whizpoppingly Wonderful”

Took my seven year old here. We loved the galleries, the dressing-up, crafts and the storytelling session. We topped off our visit with some wonderful food in the 'Twits' cafe. All teh guides and staff were very friendly. All in all a fantastic small attraction.

“Could be so much better!”

The museum is in a nice village, really good location, easy to park etc. The museum itself was a disappointment. Very very small and to be honest boring. Mainly arts and crafts you could do at home. When you think of how much brilliant material there is based on all the books of Roald Dahl its just so boring. Two of the attractions were not working the staff looked like they needed to be plugged into the electric. The workshop which we only paid £1 each child for was basically a sheet of paper with James and Giant Peach characters that you had to spend the whole visit cutting out. Very expensive for what it is. If you put all his books on your bedroom wall then that is the museum.

“Something for everyone”

This museum has thought carefully about its vistor profile and appeals to a broad demographic. There is a multi-sensory approach for very young visitors, creative stimuli for older, literate children and plenty of information to interest parents and grandparents - all this and a stone's throw from the station!
