We travelled independently having booked this accommodation through Holidaylettings. Booking with the agent Bob was simple and communications with him were friendly, helpful and informative. We had chosen this place hoping for peace and quiet, with easy, level access to the village and its sea views........the beach literally is across the road!
On arrival we were shown up to our first floor studio. The room was clean and simply furnished, plenty of clean towels which were changed twice a week, as was the bedding. Maid service was daily, although we didn't really need this. Simple self-catering facilities were provided, lovely large fridge freezer was perfectly adequate for us. Air conditioner was available if we needed it. Our room was above the Vanessa Taverna but we were never disturbed by this despite it being quite busy. The people running the taverna, brothers Manyos and Makis, were so friendly and easy going and despite trying other tavernas in the area we always came back to Vanessa's. The studio's real winner here is the large covered balcony which were virtually lived on for the two weeks we were there! Even in the showery rain we were able to sit out there. The balcony is completely private due to the large trees immediately in front; if we had one grumble it would be that these trees could have been trimmed up a bit to offer a better sea view. We had a little bakery in the same street and a couple of little stores did us well for the bits and bobs you usually need to pick up on a self-catering holiday.
Poros used to be a big hot-spot on Kefalonia but now with the rise of plastic Skala down the road it has become very quiet, a little run-down and a little unloved. But not by us. We loved it! We could sit on the little beach, often for hours and not see another soul! There are a few tavernas and little bars line the sea front and there is one pool bar where, for the price of a drink, you have unlimited use of their quiet pool, we used this a few times. The scenery around Poros is beautiful and its stunning gorge and cliffs create a beautiful backdrop to the beach. We never ceased to be amazed at the black kites circling on the cliff faces. The village is divided in two where the river in the gorge runs down to the sea in winter but in summer it is dry you can walk/drive across. As the road through Poros leads to nowhere there is very little traffic making it incredibly quiet and safe. Walking here was a treat and very suitable for those not so sure of foot. At the very end of Poros is a harbour where you can take day trips to various places around the island or over to the mainland or nearby Zakynthos. It is also where Manyos, the owner of Vanessa's Taverna, lands his catch for you to eat in the taverna later in the day!
We simply loved this place. The accommodation was perfect for us, Poros was perfect for us. And we can't wait to return.
