I stayed at the Bayview for nearly three weeks nearing the end of Nov 2010. At first I loved it- great pool, internet on site, "friendly" staff, a great movie room- the works! I even tried to get my buddies who were staying over at Tortuga to swap over. A couple days in, I started hearing stories from other backpackers about their stuff going missing. I didn't believe them because I liked where I was and didn't have any stories of my own.

About a week in, some money went missing out of my bag. I was the only one in the dorm at the time, so I know it wasn't any other traveler... but when I asked the owner about it, he blew it off. I didn't pursue it because I thought it was my own fault for leaving money in my things.

Then, a mate of mine got money stolen out of her money belt that was IN THE SAFE. I was with her all day that day and the next so I know she didn't spend it or lose it. 270,000 COP went missing. I know the safe is meant to be secure- but for god's sake, they leave the keys sitting out on the front desk to the "safe" which is perched right above that. The owner started going mad when she demanded to know what had happened. He started yelling and threatening etc etc etc. He even started laying into ME because I was her mate and I was translating her side of the story for the police. He then threatened to have us deported. I was just STANDING there!!

I swear- it looks nice and the breakfasts are good.. but you'll be paying a lot more than the room fees. I tried standing up for this place to my mates that all told me to get out- and look what I got!

I am unsure where to begin. The staff, the beds, the filth in my room, the location!! All of these things factored into my worst experience yet, please don't stay here people!

There´s very little ventilation in the rooms, even with two fans, it is very hard to sleep well in the heat. The swimming pool is a great way to cool off but you can´t sleep in the pool, can you? Also, once in a while, you´ll get a whiff of a nearby chicken coop, it lingers in the heat. Location is a little ways up the hill, away from the beach. Upside is they have a good kitchen, fridges and a filter for refilling your water bottle.

Fantastic travellers’ hostel on the little road that comes down the hill straight in to Taganga. Run by a young Colombian couple called Syra and Santiago, they have really put a lot of effort in to getting this place right for travellers. It’s got a lovely pool which is immaculately clean with sun loungers and two water showers to stand in whilst in the pool. Rooms are either in a one level concrete block behind the main building, basic but clean with good comfortable beds but the pillows are a bit lumpy. Small bathroom with a decent shower, concrete floor, clean toilet and basin. No air-con but good fans which easily do the job. No safes but the hotel has a safe where they can look after valuables for you. The communal areas are great; a good kitchen and eating area, 2 excellent TV rooms one with sofas and the other with big squashy bean bags and a massive selection of DVDs which are free to borrow. We had a double room with private bathroom, some of the other rooms in the same block were bunk beds for 2 people and private bathroom making sharing with friends easy. They also have a shared dorm room with around 6 beds and a communal bathroom for travellers on a smaller budget and some double rooms with a balcony and shared bathroom. All bedding was clean white sheets and the rooms are cleaned daily. We paid 25,000 COL pesos each for our double room with private bathroom...about £14.50 a night for both of us. Internet room and free wi-fi. All rooms seem to be priced at 25,000 each except the shared dorm room which will be cheaper. Make sure to eat 2 minutes down the road at the baguette place...amazing deep filled baguettes starting at 6,500 COL pesos...also have fantastic cold ice coffees and natural juices. There are no cash machines in Taganga but you can take a collectivo for 1,000 COL pesos to nearby Santa Marta or a taxi for around 5,000 - 7,000...where there is one in the supermarket and in a couple of other places. Also a Juan Valdez coffee shop in Santa Marta and a MacDonalds if you get desperate. Taxis do get stopped and searched for drugs on the Taganga/Santa Marta road by local police road blocks, don't be alarmed as they are quite friendly but don't be stupid and carry things on you.
