Taransay – Kinlochewe

Four of us stayed here (two couples) in May 2011 for two nights on the way up to Orkney and what a lovely, friendly guest house this is. Mary Ann greeted us with a lovely cup of tea (& Coffee) with some wonderful home-made Scotch pancakes after a tiring drive from home. I thought when I first met Mary Ann that she was quiet and a little stand offish – how wrong I was? Over the two days we got to know her and had some good conversations, she had a wonderful Island sense of humour (Harris). We did have some laughs with her and felt relaxed staying there. We are so glad that we decided to stop here and go no further North.

The rooms are spacious and plenty of room to move about in with a good solid bed with extra pillows in the large wardrobe. There is en-suite shower room (very modern) with a hot towel rail (if needed). There was a bowl of sweets in the room; no kettle etc but there was a hair-dryer.

The whole place is spotlessly clean and it is quite clear to see that Mary Ann takes pride in her place. How someone can say that it was ‘Overly’ clean is beyond me, the first thing we always check on Tripadvisor is cleanliness. There is a large guest living room where Mary Ann supplies tea / coffee (with home-made cakes, ‘go on just have another one’ says Mary Ann with a wry smile on her face…………..) after a long day touring about. This more than made up for having no kettle in the room. I am sure if you asked Mary Ann for a cuppa she would have obliged.

The TV in the guest living room was not working but there again, never missed that at all; neither are there TVs in the rooms. But again this was not a problem to us. It was great not to have TV actually for a couple of days. We were on holiday and caught up on some reading (New Kindles).

As some one mentioned earlier there is one large breakfast table in the dining room. It did not put us off as the other couple that stayed whilst we were there we friendly and had a good chinwag with them. The breakfast is more than sufficient and will fill you up. I did have one full breakfast as I do not normally eat cooked breakfast. The sausages and bacon are really tasty (Local butcher from Garloch).

Kinlochewe is a small place with not a lot about in the evening but one place you really DO HAVE to go is to the Whistle Stop Café (opposite Guest House). It is the community hall and the food is outstanding to say the least (hopefully get around to do a review), although it is closed on Sunday. That evening we went to the pub (Kinlochewe Hotel). Lovely local ales and good food. The place was full but no problem there as Mary Ann said she would get us a table anyway – and she did !

It was a real joy to stay here and thoroughly worth it. We do hope to go back to Highlands / Orkney again and if Mary Ann will have us back we would love to stay again.

Room Tip: Whistle Stop cafe is closed on a Sunday

Myself and a friend stayed here on our motorcycle tour of the highlands in June 2011 and I must say the accomodation was very comfortable indeed. We had tea and biscuits on arrival and the breakfast was very nice with fresh eggs from their own rhode island reds.
The shower was very good and the beds very comfortable. I would go back if I was visiting the region again.. I Definatley recommend .A BIG THANK YOU

To be met with the offer of tea and biscuits on arrival and be offered an impromptu packed lunch the next day when i had eaten so much for breakfast that i decided against ordering sandwiches from the cafe across the road , is very nice.
Set back from the road in a large plot of ground with very spacious rooms with the one of the best showers i have had .
I did not miss a tv in my bedroom but would have liked separate tea/coffee making facility.
The surprisingly excellent Kinlochewe Hotel less than 5 minutes walk.

If you love great home cooking, fresh farm eggs and a warm welcome this is the place you want to stay! There are 2 very good restaurants within walking distance (one is across the street) and beautiful hiking trails close by.

We stayed at this B&B for five days in June 2010 and we enjoyed our stay very much. The room was perfect, breakfast was delicious and the owners were most kind and helpfull. It was permitted to store our bikes in the garage and we made several fantastic but tough cycletours in the wonderful nature and landscape. We didn't miss the t.v. at all! We had a very good time thanks to the hospitality of the owners.
