We took the train into Davos and switched to a couple busses to get here. Make no mistake - Monstein is a village. It's bigger brother Davos is a cool 8km away. You are in the 'pampas' as the locals say here.
The Swiss are mostly what you will find here. Which I consider a good thing. Monstein is an authentic Swiss village, untouched for the most part by new technology and modernity in general. And that's why someone wants to come here. To get away from it all. There is one store that doubles as a post office and one restaurant, besides the hotel restaurant and that's it.
Ok onto the hotel itself... We were bumped into a bigger room because even on christmas eve, this place was booked up. What a pleasure this hotel is. It has the old wood cabin feel, but with modern amenities. Great decor, makes you feel like you are in a modern resort cabin in the middle of the woods. Love it. More charm, this hotel couldn't have. We had lunch and dinner here, both were excellent. The mere fact that you could here your veggies being chopped and not microwaved was awesome.
We went up the mountain a bit on a short hike, it was great. Stunning views and lots of nature to see.
I picture this place like a celebrity retreat where someone wants to get away from it all and remain hidden from the rest of the world. It would be great for that.
The rooms were well equipped, tv even has CNBC and BBC English channels. They really put the extra effort in this hotel and it shows...
Now onto the only negative I could find. Getting here by bus/train. The only thing I think is lacking is pickup by the hotel. i originally thought they should pickup guests in Davos, but that's not realistic. But I think they should tell guests to take the train to the Monstein train station and they pick up from there. It's just 4km away and taking the train to Monstein station is easier than the two busses.
But don't let that deter you from coming here, even with the two busses its not a huge deal and its worth the trip. The best hotel we stayed at in our two weeks here.(8 hotels)
Oh they have a special Christmas menu also which looked great but we were already stuffed from lunch.
