“One of the better hotels near mt bromo”
Reviewed April 19, 2014 via mobile

Stayed here overnight before heading to Mt bromo. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is a good view of Mt bromo. I stayed in the " superior room" which is okay given the hotel is located in a remote village. The thing which annoyed me was the gas powered heater which only provides hot water for 1-2 minutes before it shuts off. Hence, please remember to collect hot water in the pail provided as it takes 5-10 mins for the gas powered heater to reset. Not a good idea waiting naked in 15 degree Celsius weather for more hot water. I resorted to having to boil hot water with kettle provided to supplement my hot water needs. Breakfast provided was decent but not great. Oh yes, wifi is provided in restaurant and reception only.

The hotel is located pretty much right next to Mt. Bromo thus giving one spectacular views during the day. When we arrived at night we couldn't see a thing. Same case for the early morning as we ventured forth to see the sunrise at the lookout point. When we did return to the hotel the view was great.

The rooms are alright as most people would arrive the night before and then head off after that. One thing that is noted that if you want to shower, the hot water system is a bit iffy as at times it works perfectly fine. At times it couldn't fire up. So when it could fire up, there's a pail available and you just fill it up with the hot water and use the scoop.

We stayed here for a night before moving off the next next morning. The room is adequate as a place to crash/ sleep albeit being slight dusty (probably due to persistent wind & volcano dust & not so diligent up-keeping). No heater in room but hot water for showering is available through a gas water heater. Clean towels, complimentary toiletries, electrical kettle / pot accompanied with complimentary instant coffee/tea are available. Breakfast included is decent, small self-service buffet style (noodles, rice, vegetable, meat dish, fruits, Indonesian crackers) with omelette station. Most importantly, the lodge has direct view of the caldera & Gunung Bromo is easily accessible. Lodge staff are friendly & quick to attend to our requests. Generally, I am an easy-going traveler therefore Lava View Lodge meets my expectation. Definitely not for fussy & high expectation travelers

Stayed here last year on our trip to Java and just stayed because of the location, on the rim with a perfect view on the Bromo area (when your lucky..). Because when arriving it was very cold with a lot of fog, so no view at all, luckily next day we got a perfect view. Rooms are very basic, old and cold…. No heating but with a hot shower. Food is OK, nothing fancy but also not bad. As it is the only hotel right on the rim of the crater, they can just ask a lot of money for the rooms. As most people will only stay for one night an leave early for the sun rise, there is no need for them to really improve the place I think. So stay here because of the convenient location and do not expect a fancy place.

Stayed a night in the family room during visit to Mount Bromo. The hotel look nice outside as a whole but the Room was very old interiorly with a very basic toilet. Freezing in night time. toilet hot water was totally useless same to the bed blanket. Had to wear 3 clothes to warm my body. Hotel scenery is facing mount bromo with nice view. Hot coffee and tea is free at reception. The meals in lava view cafe is inedible and taste horrible. No wifi in the room. Only in cafe or reception.
The hotel room was over price compared to the service it provided.

Reading other traveler's reviews we were prepared not to expect anything here. Still, we were baffled by the state of this Lodge. Definitely one of the worst hotels I've ever spent a night in.

After checking in, we were given the lowest fare room, even though we asked if there were any other (higher priced) categories available. The room was supercold and so moisty, even the fresh towels hanging in the bathroom were literally wet. We even tried to put them outside into the sun to dry them. Being in the room for a couple of minutes we decided to ask again at the reception for another room and surprisingly now there was one available!?

Desperate about having to spend a night in this dark and wet hole, we had a quick look at the other available room and then moved there. However, it was only slightly warmer and a bit less moisty. On top of that the toilet in the bathroom was leaking and there was a light at the front porch that was directly shining onto the bed all night and could neither be switched off nor be shaded somehow - wonderful for relaxed sleeping... I've added two pictures from a wall-mount lamp to demonstrate the state of the room, no need to say anything.

I'd like to mention that we are not especially picky about cleanliness or anything. We've done backpacking, camping and also stayed in various low budget places. This one is just too much, they're clearly exploiting their monopoly there. AVOID if possible.

Room Tip: If you really decide to stay there, ask at least for the *new* rooms. Speaking with other travelers...

The cottages made a great base for our trip to bromo. Unlike all the mad rushers we arrived after a quick lunch at java banana. Whilst java banana was completely covered in mist as we drove along to lava view the mist was clearing and we had a spectacular view of mount batuk, mount bromo and the sea of sands. After checking in we arranged a jeep to take us down to bromo where we slowly took the time to enjoy the climb up bromo. For a large amount of time we had the pleasure of enjoying the mountain to ourselves and could observe how some of the rituals are performed there. We also got to enjoy the most spectacular sunset on the way down - perhaps even better then what the sunrise was the next morning. Food was good at the lodge, though service could be a bit rushed and off at times. The next morning we made a point of going to the view point for sunrise with the hordes but thereafter could break away and enjoy views of the activity from the lodge. Worth staying just for the views. Cottages are very clean and well equipped. They also face the sunrise.
