“Don't call it hotel”

Our first impression of this place was rather okay. As has been said before, the rooms are not luxurious in any way. They didn't seem to be clean either as we found several pieces of hair from previous occupants as well as a cigarette stub just behind the door. The bed seemed clean though. We thought that it was okay for the price we paid (26 Euros per double room).

So much for the room. What really got to our nerves though is the 'service'. Imagine a large lobby which is the restaurant as well as some kind of festival room at the same time. Then imagine a group of about eight people hanging out there. It is not really clear who works there and who just likes to chill there. At one point a girl approached us, apparently the receptionist, but didn't understand a word of what we were saying. We wanted to book the tour the other receptionist who spoke English very well had offered us earlier that day (transfer to Bromo + Jeep + transfer to Crater + transfer back to Probolinggo for 325.000 which does not include the entrance fee of 75.000 per person). We know it is a rip-off price but we did the best we could to look for other options in town. There are no motorbikes for rent and the public bus only leaves at around 7am which means that we would have missed the sunrise. So basically we were stuck in Probolinggo and very much dependent on the tour package. Eventually, we needed to go to find help at another hotel because all we were offered at Lava Lava were the blank faces of 'the gang' hanging out there. They made some phone calls but communication was close to impossible so we arranged it through the neighbouring hotel that called a guy named Togari who gave us a deal for 275.000 + entrance fee. It turned out be a good choice.

Having agreed to go with his company at 2am, we wanted to order breakfast to take away at Lava Lava so that once we would return to the hotel to get our stuff after the trip we could quickly eat something on our way to the train station. After about 3 minutes I thought thy had understood our request, however 30 minutes later (at 9pm that night) a bag arrived with eggs and bread..

My advice: Book something closer to Bromo right from the start. It might be slightly more expensive, but it means you are not stuck in town from where it is really pricey to get up there an apparently, if you stay at Lava Lava, also hard to arrange.

Probolinggo isn't exactly a place you want to "stay" unless your passing through or using it as a base for Bromo.
The staff was pretty nice. The food was ok. The rooms were decent.
The price listed for a sunrise trek to Bromo was $270,000rp and yet we were told it wasn't right (this was on THEIR list that was taped to the counter) and we paid $320,000.
Our guides did NOT speak even basic English which was quite frustrating.
I would say the only good thing is that it's really close to the bus terminal.

I just have a night and a day to visit Bromo. Staying at Cemara Lawang is too pricey and the weather is too unbearable, so I chose to stay in Hotel Lava Lava. Just 200m from Bus Station (BayuAngga), this hotel offered me a single bed room, and helped me to book a-day-tour to Bromo from local tour. The room is quite clean and nice, considering the price. Mr. Ferry and his staffs are so helpful, so the service is great. A note on local tour, usually, they put a different price between domestic tourist and foreign one.

Room Tip: ask for second floor room far from the street.

Lava Lava hotel, located in Probolinggo, is a very good starting point for a trip to Bromo (c. 1h drive to the Bromo National Park gate). Clean, spacious rooms with A/C offer good standards for travellers. As long as you do not expect any luxury you will be pleased, althoug you need to be carefull with the hot water in the tub - it is very hot!

Hotel offers also trips to Bromo (e.g. sunrise), organised by the 3rd party tourist office, however please be careful in negotiations and agree all the additional expenditures if you do not want to be surprised with an extra costs like we were.

We checked in after a long ride late at night and we couldn't tell who was working there or was just watching tv in the lobby. We ask if it was possible to book a trip to the Bromo Just like on the telefone that afternoon and after aan long discussion they called a friend. Finaly this friend showed up, Coco was his name. DON'T TRUST COCO. He is a lying son of a [--]. He ripped us off. Hotel is noisy and not really clean and warm water is difficult. Room was not really bad but i would not go there again.
