Our first impression of this place was rather okay. As has been said before, the rooms are not luxurious in any way. They didn't seem to be clean either as we found several pieces of hair from previous occupants as well as a cigarette stub just behind the door. The bed seemed clean though. We thought that it was okay for the price we paid (26 Euros per double room).
So much for the room. What really got to our nerves though is the 'service'. Imagine a large lobby which is the restaurant as well as some kind of festival room at the same time. Then imagine a group of about eight people hanging out there. It is not really clear who works there and who just likes to chill there. At one point a girl approached us, apparently the receptionist, but didn't understand a word of what we were saying. We wanted to book the tour the other receptionist who spoke English very well had offered us earlier that day (transfer to Bromo + Jeep + transfer to Crater + transfer back to Probolinggo for 325.000 which does not include the entrance fee of 75.000 per person). We know it is a rip-off price but we did the best we could to look for other options in town. There are no motorbikes for rent and the public bus only leaves at around 7am which means that we would have missed the sunrise. So basically we were stuck in Probolinggo and very much dependent on the tour package. Eventually, we needed to go to find help at another hotel because all we were offered at Lava Lava were the blank faces of 'the gang' hanging out there. They made some phone calls but communication was close to impossible so we arranged it through the neighbouring hotel that called a guy named Togari who gave us a deal for 275.000 + entrance fee. It turned out be a good choice.
Having agreed to go with his company at 2am, we wanted to order breakfast to take away at Lava Lava so that once we would return to the hotel to get our stuff after the trip we could quickly eat something on our way to the train station. After about 3 minutes I thought thy had understood our request, however 30 minutes later (at 9pm that night) a bag arrived with eggs and bread..
My advice: Book something closer to Bromo right from the start. It might be slightly more expensive, but it means you are not stuck in town from where it is really pricey to get up there an apparently, if you stay at Lava Lava, also hard to arrange.
