“Spectacular”

Reviewed January 30, 2014

There are 4 such cave temples. They are about 1500 years old. Three of the caves are exquisitely curved with Hindu idols, scenes from myths and other religious motifs. The 4th cave has Jain sculptures. The views from the caves are spectacular, especially those of the Bhoothnath temples, the Augustya tank and the Shivalaya temples. There are lots of steps that you have to climb, so better take an auto or a tanga from the market area to reach the place.

These caves depict early south Indian temple architechture (~1500 years ago). This site is fairly well maintained and has a set of 4 caves, 1 dedicated to Shiva, 1 dedicated to Vishnu, 1 dedicated to Shiva & Vishnu and the last cave dedicated to Jainism. Make sure to go with a guide so that you can appreciate the beauty of the architechture better and learn about the carvings as well. As the caves are North facing, you won't feel the heat even if you go there on a hot day. There is also a lake and a lake bank nearby ( walkable ), you can get good views of the lake from caves 3 & 4. This is a must visit place of North Karnataka to learn about our history & heritage.........throughly enjoyed visitng Badami caves

the caves are not very far from the city of Badami which in itself is a small city. the caves are on high ground and you can easily get auto to the caves. Then you will have to climb quite a few steps to reach the very top. Do take precautions with monkeys.

Beautiful temples at varying levels with views over Badami and the surrounding area. Very interesting to see how they were carved out in a time before electric tools. The monkeys are highly aggressive so watch your things!

extremely beautiful, the view from above is so serene, try & go as early as possible, they open it at around 6am, it gets crowded after 9.30am.
