Hotel Sacacomie

I've been there 3 times. First time was back in 2007, really nice hotel certainly overpriced and at the that time had to pay a bunch for very unstable wifi. It was a family trip, the kids loved it too. I went back solo for business just a few weeks later and the reception staff didn't pay attention to my previous stay, well, I would say really poor reception desk welcoming services. I went back in Oct 2009 and must say that this hotel has a real special attraction, I definately recommend it for a retreat, just wished it was not so pricey.

We were looking to get away from it all after some days in Montreal sightseeing. The guests come from all over (US, Europe); so the hotel has an international flavor. You have to come to dinner in shifts (book right after you arrive or you will end up on the late shift the first night!).
Plus:
- nice room with great views on the lake ( we had No. 315; 237 CAD per night)
- very good breakfast buffet, terrific omelette
- great staff at the reception and serving dinner
- professional massages at the spa (didn't try the rest)

Minus:
- no lounge chairs on our balcony to put your feet up and enjoy the views
- dinner, the food was really disappointing
- staff and infrastructure down by the lake. we did a kayak trip and asked for some help and advice. This all seemed to be too much for the gentlemen. We also expected the place to be a bit more 'cleaned up'.
Next time we will look at something 'really away from it all' and then go with less comfort - but more the real adventure!

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel very much, though the staff seemed a bit spread thin. This is not a quaint lodge--but really a large hotel with standard rooms. The real plus is the breathtaking location and the diverse activities, including especially the summit hike. Dining was good, though nothing too inventive. We didn't try the spa services, but other guests seemed happy.

I've copied part of the letter sent to management twice but I am yet to receive a response - they obviously just take the customers money & don't really care about the services they offer, even if you have prepaid for it & don't receive what was promised. The location is fantastic but the service & value for money leave a lot to be desired. Additionally, they promote themselves as a non smoking environment but you won't be able to eat your breakfast on the balcony overlooking the lake unless you enjoy gobfuls of cigarette smoke with your coffee.

Sent to management twice without response:
"The first evening, we were in our room & noticed a strong smell of cigarettes. We have a zero tolerance level for cigarettes & additionally our son is asthmatic. We found out that the cigarette smoke was actually coming through the window & you could see why as several people were smoking cigarettes at the front door of the hotel where there is an outdoor ashtray. This was a huge disappointment & I immediately asked that our room be changed. Unfortunately, we were told that this was not possible. I am still not sure why. Thus, we were unable to have a window open at all. The following day we were able to move rooms & were located far away from the ashtray offered at the entrance to the hotel. We were offered no compensation for the inconvenience of having to again move rooms.

The new room did not have the cigarette problem but had a very noisy hot water tap in the bathroom that was not fixed during our stay.

The first morning we wished to have breakfast on the outdoor balcony. Again, we were denied being able to enjoy what we had paid for due to cigarette smoke. Several people were also outside eating breakfast & smoking. A highly unpleasant experience & this meant we had to get up & move inside. We ensured that the glass doors were always kept closed.

One of the reasons we also chose your hotel was due to the fact that you boast about being a “non smoking establishment”. This could not be further from the truth.

Our dinner meals were included in the package that we had purchased. It was also mentioned that service charges were also included in this amount paid. Thus, we prepaid for service & of course expected to receive it once we were eating.

The first night we ordered the coffee parfait for desert but were then told that it was not available. We then asked for the ice cream for the children & were told that it was not available either. Hence, we had paid for a menu that you did not deliver. Additionally, I would expect that we were told before ordering what was not available. Funnily enough, we had the identical experience the following night. Surely your staff must have known that those two deserts were not available. On the final night, it happened again. Then the waitress told us that the freezer was broken. It was obviously clear that you didn’t even fix the freezer over those 3 days. Additionally, our children had no desert & my wife & myself were not able to eat the desert that we wanted from the menu. From a service point of view, I would expect honesty. Given that we had already paid for our meals & were not able to even have our choice from a limited menu, I do not consider that you should have to pay the full price.

There were 3 beers on tap & we were not sure about them, so we asked if we could have a small cup just to taste 2 of them. The waiter was actually very rude & was reluctant to do this, rather he just told us to take one of the beers. Again, I asked him, if he could just pour a small amount into a glass to try the beer. Five minutes later he returned & just said that it was not possible as the bar staff were too busy. So I wondered over to the bar & there were 3 people behind the bar, appearing to have plenty of time. We are also still waiting for the two orange juices that we had ordered. They never arrived at the table, even after asking twice.

Additionally, freshly cracked pepper was not offered on two nights out of three & we had to ask for it. On the last night, we also had to ask for coffee. The waiter brought the bill even before he had asked us if we wanted coffee. In general, I am very happy to pay for service but for the service offered by Hotel Sacacomie over dinner I would not have tipped at all."

About 2.5/3 hours drive from Montreal and situated at end of road some 6 k outside of St-Alexis-des-Monts.

Hotel overlooks Lake Sacacomie which means great views from restaurant and bar terraces + some rooms but 10 minute down several flights of steps to lake side beach.

Rooms are somewhat basic (no air conditioning but ceiling fan), most with no tv's but clean and comfortable. Would have liked room safe (or safety deposit at main desk). Our room had the morning sun rather than the evening sun, which helped keep the room cool.

Given distance from any alternatives it was a good job that meals were good (wide choice for breakfast buffet and good choice for evening meal). Given prices shown on menu, pleased we were on half board.

Staff very helpful and pleasant.

Went on the bear and beaver watch - saw both with beavers coming close enough to take branches from the guide.

It had rained for several days prior to our arrival so walks were rather muddy underfoot. This plus attentions of mosquitoes curtailed exploration so spent more time by the lake (hardly a chore). Recommend bringing anti mos cream and ensuring fly screen is kept closed.

One pc available free of charge for guests so able to confirm airline booking on line.

The service at this hotel is above reproach. The staff are friendly, the food is fantastic, and the surrounding area is beautiful.

Not everything on their website is on the mark, however. For instance, their is supposed to be a Husky breeder 'on site', but it's actually a 40 minute drive from the hotel. After travelling to what seems like the edge of civilization to get there, I wasn't trekking any further. Unfortunately, the pool was closed when we were there too . . . odd in June.

The Hotel is aesthetically wonderful and the food is on par with the enchantress location. However it happened that a wedding was celebrated at the hotel the first night we were there, and an after hour took place in a room close to ours. Needless to say it was impossible to sleep, many calls and in person discussion with the concierge later he was still unable to make the other guest be quiet. He finally moved us to another room (at 3 AM...) where we were able to sleep a little bit. No other compensation were offered. After our return home, I've sent a complaint letter to the hotel and never received answer from them. So for the price it's a big disappointment.
