We chose the Castle Inn because it's about halfway between our house and that of the friends we wanted to lunch with. There were one or two other options but none sounded that tempting, and the good reviews of the Castle persuaded us. They turned out to be absolutely spot-on. We know Bungay well but as it was our school-run destination, we'd never been to that pub. More fool us. Parking was easy (just as well - Bungay isn't awash with free parking) and we entered to a charming welcome. The dining room looked inviting but it was a lovely day so we sat outside - very comfortable with a HUGE leafy tree for shade, and nice pots of herbs on each table. We were given instant drinks & menus plus sight of the specials board, and from there on in we simply couldn't have faulted it. If I was to list the delights in order, the most outstanding feature was definitely the staff. We encountered two young employees, both of whom looked after us brilliantly. They really were extraordinarily astute - service was absolutely top class and done with enormous charm while being unobtrusively efficient. We all noticed. And then there was the food - EVERY course was quite delicious - a chilli beef starter was a huge success, mackerel salad ditto and although I wondered if my husband's Caesar salad might have been a bit dull compared with everything else, he said the chicken was cooked to perfection, which in that dish is surprisingly rare. As for the belly pork or ribs or whatever they were - they were demolished in minutes and were, apparently, to die for. We hope he didn't - but if he did, he most certainly will have died happy.....This was such a lovely place to come and we'll most certainly be back. Our sincere thanks to all concerned.

Room Tip: We only lunched here so I can't comment on the rooms.

Stayed here for one night. Lovely food in attractive dining room. The bedroom was a good size, nicely decorated and with a sofa in the corner by the fireplace. Service at breakfast slow which was frustrating as we wanted to be on our way. Toast did not arrive until right at the end of the meal.

Sloping floors (old) in our cozy hotel room. Dinner and breakfast were outstanding! For dinner, we shared a charcuterie and each added broccoli and zucchini soup, which was fresh and tasty. The raspberry and lavender crepe brûlée for dessert was lovely! Breakfast (included) of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon was tasty!! Great coffee too!

Amazing food always cooked with the freshest local ingredients and a generous hand. We always anticipate meals at The Castle Inn with its gorgeous seasonal menu and its unstuffy comfortable surroundings with relish. There is always something unusual for vegetarians - not just the run of the mill option typical option of a risotto - in this case Fava Bean Fritters with spring vegetables. The other main course was the perfectly presented 21 day hung 8oz sirloin steak with sautéed mushrooms, spring vegetables and chips. The reason we didn't have a starter was to leave room for one of the delicious desserts!! The Eton mess with toasted pistachios, strawberries, summer fruits and vanilla cream was luscious, and the individually cooked Apple Crumble with custard put a huge smile on my dining companion's face. Followed up by coffee. Thank you Mark and Tanya for a superb meal which was a perfect finish to a perfect spring Suffolk evening.

Just come back from a great weekend at The Castle. Went to the area for a wedding and our party took over all the rooms. I cannot praise the staff enough for their kind and attentive service from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Breakfasts were excellent. Had one lunch there and wish we had booked dinner . . . it was a mistake to go elsewhere. Food was great. Rooms very comfortable - as you would expect for an old coaching inn . . . floors a bit wibbly wobbly but that all added to the charm.

Room Tip: We had a room on the front - the traffic didn't bother us but if you want super quiet I suggest you ask for a room on the back.
