We've all done it. Seen somewhere on Trip Advisor get great reviews, booked it and then crossed everything that it'll actually be as good as you'd hoped.
Well, just don't worry. Avithos Resort is just super. We stayed for a week in a superior studio.
1. Resort itself
Best pool I've been in- spotless and gorgeous
Spotlessly clean everywhere
Lots of different types of sunbeds so everyone's happy
Stunning maintained gardens- gave privacy and wonderful flowers, birds and butterflies
Great breakfast buffet
Tasty pool bar snacks- not a huge range but it's not a restaurant- recommend the Greek salad
Very peaceful with views to the mountain
Lovely, fun and friendly staff where nothing is too much trouble. Everything you've read about the service is bang-on.
Great bed- massive and comfy. Best sleeps I've had in an age
Fab quality linen and towels
Reception gives you fresh beach/pool towels too so you don't need to bother taking
Cleaned and tidied every day- fresh towels when you want
Great Air conditioning
Little kitchenette with hob/microwave/fridge
More cups plates glasses cutlery etc than you'd ever need
Sweet little patio area - some had balconies or terraces but we had a garden flat
3. Island itself
Resort is just 10 mins walk to local beaches- Avithos was our fave- sandy, shallow and great beach bar. 2 Lovely tavernas there too.
We hired a car for 3 days- cabs are expensive on the island and you really need one if you're going to get the most out of the island. It's quite big and takes about 2 hours to do the whole length. The roads are typically Greek- signs point one way and often mean another but if you don't mind being a bit lost sometimes then it's fun- you're not at work so it's not that bad!
We rented a little Panda for €75 for 3 days through the resort.
The island is mountainous so many roads are VERY windy and not for the faint hearted- take it slow and try not to look down too much and you'll be fine!
The more brave you are, the more amazing places you'll discover- incredible vistas that I'll never forget. Sure, goats and boulders occassionally appear in the road but hey, so what? Beats the M25.
Do drive up to St Georges Castle and eat at Palatinos- AMAZING view and superb food.
Antisamos beach is also a MUST- drive over the mountains to Sami and it's signed from there- great for snorkling as millions of fish and surrounded by trees
Makris Gialos beach near Lassi was great too- luxury beach beds, great bar, clear sea
Myrtos beach- WELL worth a visit but huge currents so quite dangerous if you're not a strong swimmer- the bluest water you'll see in your life. Just go to say you've been.
Drive to the little harbour village of Asos. It's just wonderful. Snorkel in the harbour, eat lovely food and dream of what it'd be like to live there.
We didn't stay long enough.
