Myself and friends have been returning to The Astra Village for several years now as we enjoy our holidays there so very much. It is a family run hotel, all the staff are so friendly and welcoming. Bedrooms have air conditioning and safety deposit boxes, a compact kitchenette which we find so useful having a kettle, fridge and hot plates. All the rooms have baconies with table and chairs. The hotel and rooms are kept spotless and the laundry changed regularly. There is a lovely swimming pool with comfortable lounge chairs and sun umberellas, with a bar serving tasty snacks. If you prefer a sandy beach there is one 10 mins walk away. The dining area is open on two sides overlooking the pool. Breakfast is buffet style, with a wonderful selection of foods serving all tastes.
Cephalonia is a beautiful island and it is well worth hiring a car to see it.
We shall be returning for another wonderful holiday at The Astra Village, June 2013, have already booked and can't wait !!

We love Astra Village having visited it for the past six years, and will be returning this year (2013), which surely speaks for itself! We also bump into other folk on return visits, so they must feel the same. The hotel offers everything that we ask for - quiet venue with excellent accommodati, being comfortable bed (sheets changed regularly) full size fridge, plenty of storage, nice balcony with good vistas & no extra charge for air-conditioning & safe. The public areas are very stylish and comfortable offering a very relaxing ambience, and the friendly and efficient staff always make every effort to meet individual requirements. We enjoy the breakfast, with it's varied choice, but choose not to go half-board, as we prefer the more varied (and excellent) full restaurant menu. This also gives us the option of occasionally visiting one the local tavernas for a change of scenery. Ammes beach is very close and safe, being very sandy & fairly shallow for quite a way out. Argostoli is a short distance away and well worth a visit.... lots of nooks and crannies to look out, but not on Saturday afternoon when everything is closed! We have never hired a car, although plenty are available, choosing to use bus (infrequent), taxi, and/or tours to see the rest of the island...yet we still go back for more!

Room Tip: Upper levels, for best views

We arrived late and the hotel looked really pretty and boutique style reception and bar area was very inviting.
Spacious room with fridge and kitchenette, the room was tired looking especially the bathroom and the tv in the room didn't work properly with no English channels. The room had a lovely little balcony with table and chairs which was nice to sit out as the sun went down. The food choices spoilt the holiday and I would advise against the half board option as the restaurant in the hotel has a lovely wide selection of meals which you can't have if half board!!!! I couldn't believe it I never would have booked half board had I known it was a set meal every night with little choice! Every night was pork of some description while people around us ( who weren't half board) were enjoying lovely pizza, pasta, Greek salads and steaks!
Breakfast was very different it was a buffet style and very comprehensive with lots of choices served until 10am.
The snack bar was nice with a variety of snacks and happy hour 530-730pm every night with cocktails and large frosted beers.
Ames beach is about a ten minute walk down the hill which is a sandy cove and also tropicanna snack bar which was really nice with selection of snacks and cold drinks reasonably priced plus free wifi.

Dear guest,
I would lile to thank you for your comments for our hotel. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with our halfboard option, but in all tour-operator catalogs it is described well as a set-up 3 course dinner. We have made a selection of all specialties from our menu, set every day differently, so as everyone can taste most of our delicius food choices.
Although the set-up menu is fixed, there is always an option to choose something else from the menu, if it is needed, gloutene-free, vegeterian choices etc.
I hope that in general we tried to make your holidays relaxing and enjoyable.
Hope to see you again in the future.

In Norwegian there is a place called "Syden". It is best described as South European Charter Destination, and it is a place you can travel to with no worries and few surprises. The visit to Astra Village was my first Syden experience and we stayed there for one week.

A day in Astra starts with a rush to get to the restaurant before the (good) breakfast closes at 10am. All guests seems to arrive for breakfast at 9.40, and at 10.30 people start to turn up at the nice, big pool. There is also a nice, small beach a few hundred meters from the hotel. After hours in the sun or water, you go to bed. This routine is usually only disturbed by the meals, which is the low point of Astra, Svoronata or maybe Syden. The menu at all restaurants in the area is that of a Western European Pub in addition to a few greek dishes and some fish. Your best bet is to ask if the kitchen have any fresh fish. Alternatively, the greek dishes might bee good. If your not a big fan of french fries, ask for something else as fries is served with almost all dishes. I kept forgetting that and ended up gaining four kilos in one week. Whatever you do, do not order the steak at the Astra Village restaurant (impossible to eat).

To break away from the sunbathing zombie world, rent a car. Kefalonia is a beautiful island, and it is worth going all the way up to Fiskardo. But to be honest, the island is not super interesting. Not that it matters, because if you come here, you want to sunbath and there is always sun.

Argostoli, the capital village of the island 9 km and a 15€ taxi ride from Astra, has all the souvernies you want, too many ice cream cafes and supposedly a couple of nightclubs.

To sum up my experience of the hotel: Very friendly, clean, and I guess as a Syden destination it is everything you want. The wi-fi is really bad, which is good, because you should not be online all the time when on holiday. Our room came with a cute, retro color TV and a nice view. It was not possible to keep the room after 11am the day of check out, but you can leave the luggage in the entrance of the lobby. That works, because there is no crime at the island according to the staff.

Room Tip: Rooms starting with 11 or 12 are furhtest away from the lobby, making them quieter and they have a view, sort of.
