“A reliable guesthouse in the most charming town (3.5 stars)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

We came to Gengenbach at the height of the Advent to see the beautiful town hall. If it is Christmas time, it is truly THE perfect place to stay (see photos). It's a quaint, no frills family run hotel with a restaurant on the main floor.

Location: Hotel Restaurant Sonne is in the heart of Gengenbach and you feel like you are part of the city. In the morning when you wake, there is a small market in the square below you. At night, there an occasional chatter heard, but it is very peaceful. It is easy enough to find from the train station, no more than 10 minutes walk (even with luggage).

Rooms: There is a certain charm to the hotel, but there is nothing fancy about it. Beds and blankets were comfortable and done up in classic Bavarian style! The bathrooms are clean and functional (but small and dated). The rooms are exactly as shown in the photos and incredibly spacious. There are a few long flights of stairs in this 3 story home/hotel. The halls are dark and creaky at night, so make note of where the light switches are in the daytime!

Service: The included breakfast was the typical continental spread + boiled eggs, and restaurant was bustling at both breakfast and dinner! I enjoyed the inn, but found the service a bit lacking. I had no troubles booking by email. On arrival, the doors were locked but there was a clear sign to ring the doorbell if you are a hotel guest. The lady was courteous but a bit gruff. It seemed like her family was in the restaurant most of the day and when I went to pay or ask questions, I felt like I was intruding. Our stay was not as warm and cozy as other places. But then again, we speak no German, so perhaps it is more an issue with our communication.

Nevertheless, I would not hesitate to book it again if I were to spend a longer time in the future. With the cleanliness and spaciousness, it would make a nice home base for exploring the Black Forest.

We stayed here for 2 days during our stay at Gengenbach, Black Forest. This is a good spot to use as the base to explore around the black forest.

This inn is placed close to the main street and is quite easy to find. We stayed in a double bedroom on the second floor. Very warm and comfortable room with a good clean washroom. There is a restaurant below which serves an excellent breakfast, but for the other meals recommend that you have it outside.

Ensure that you collect the Konus card from the owner of the inn to make it possible to get the necessary discounts on the trains, etc through the blackforest. From here, the station is just a 5 min walk.

The family running the inn is a typical german family and if you aint too sure of the German language, it could be a bit of struggle.

We stayed one night over a December weekend having been lucky to get a cancellation and receved a warm and friendly welcome from a younger member of the family. A double room overlooking the Christmas market, warm, comfortable and with a spotless shower room. The inn is very old, the wooden stairs and floors to the hallways wide and creaky and unheated, but atmospheric.

Gengenbach is a beautiful Black Forest town. The inn is in a perfect central location, ideal for the Christmas market. Their garage is just around the corner.

We had an excellent meal in the restaurant and would highly recommend eating here, necessary to reserve a table at busy times. Service was pleasant in the evening, though in the morning at check-out the older woman couldn't even manage a smile or a friendly comment.

Hotel Sonne was a lovely place to stay right on the main square so the location was perfect. The rooms were large, clean and very comfortable. The bathroom was huge with good showers.
We had breakfast each morning in the restaurant which was delcious but we did not use the restaurant otherwise.
The owners were quite reserved but very helpful when asked for assistance.
I would certainly consider staying here again if i should return to the area.

I highly recommend this hotel if you're visiting the Black Forest. Gengenbach is a gorgeous little town, and this inn is right at the heart of it.

For the very reasonable sum of 38 euros I had a room with two beds, a separate shower room and separate toilet, plus breakfast. As always in Germany, the room was immaculate and the breakfast hearty. The Hotel-Restaurant Sonne is a traditional inn, family-run: mother, daughter and aunt serve in the restaurant, and son-in-law does the cooking. The fare is south-west German, so expect Kaesespaetzle (pasta with a cheese crust), Schnitzel, and satisfying meat-and-dumpling dishes. The food is delicious and the portions are generous.

I tried to pre-book via their web page, but a software bug made this impossible. After a frustrating half hour, I gave up and sent them an email instead. I received verbal confirmation of the booking on my voicemail - this was a nice touch. The owners really must sort out the web page problem - it could be losing business for them.

My only negative comment is that the family could have been more welcoming; they were rather unsmiling and reserved. Also, one of the clan tends to occupy the front doorstep for much of the day, chain-smoking cigarettes. This is not a good advert for the hotel, and makes you feel a little uncomfortable when using the front door.

I recommend going on the tour with the night watchman, who dresses in seventeenth century costume and stops at various landmarks to sing that "all's well". The tour costs nothing, and you get a real feel of what it would have been like to live in Gengenbach 300 years ago, when the watchman's songs would reassure the townsfolk that they could look forward to 'eine gute Nacht'.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

We were two grandparents, daughter and two grandchildren (10 & 12) staying in two rooms for one night. The hotel was clean, the rooms were large and they had hair dryers (which Oma loved). The restaurant had excellent food but was in a separate building from the rooms. There was a 5 Euro charge for 24 hours of WiFi or a 1 Euro charge for 1hr. I sprang for 24 hours, but used less than an hour (the time was calculated on actual use). Next time I'll only get an hour. The WiFi could only be used in the rooms, not in the restaurant. The free parking garage was extremely tight for our rental van, but we made it fit with work and care. Gengenbach is a beautiful Black Forest town that's worth seeing. The hotel is right on the main square. Having the restaurant and rooms in separate buildings created a problem with the one key they gave us because both the front door and the room were always locked, with no one to open the front door when we knocked. In other words, it is difficult for a pair to separate and then enter the room building at diffferent times. If you want to go to the car in the garage you also need the key. Ask for two keys, which we didn't. The breakfast was great. There was no elevator so we had to pull our suitcases up a flight of stairs.

Room Tip: You might want to ask for a ground floor room to avoid carrying your suitcase up a flight of stairs...

Stayed at this lovely B&B during our trip to the Black forest area.

The location is fantastic - right in the heart of town, right at the marketplace. Lots of eating, drinking and shopping options close by. While we were there, at the marketplace we witnessed a flea market - on one day and a food market the other day- selling fresh local produce..

Gengenbach was a good base for us to explore the other places in the blackforest region.

We had a double room - which was large and very pleasantly decorated. The bathroom was also pretty large.
The breakfast was good.
The Konus card which is given to guests of this hotel, is helpful and gives free access to local transport and discounts at many attractions.
