“A view of back country New Zealand”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2013

We travelled from Douglas , 15km out of Stratford to Whangmomona and back on the disused railway.
Dave provided a great commentary and we enjoyed seeing the back country and exploring the history that makes this a fascinating part of NZ.
It was chilly in the morning but warmed up throughout the day. I would recommend taking layers of clothing and there is a blanket provided.
I would recommend - it is expensive but we both had the time to enjoy the scenery wheras when you are driving only one person can relax.
Our lunch at the Whangamomona Hotel is what you would expect in a back country pub - fresh and wholesome.

“Childhood fantasy to be the driver on a real railway line comes true!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

And what a scenic and adventurously remote place to have it happen. Forgotten World Adventures has in its '20 Tunnel Tour' put together a thoroughly professional package with informed guiding, good food and a most committed, friendly and fun staff to go with it. Indeed having had a rather extreme weather event occur just before our trip they really went 'the extra mile' (thank you guide Maree) to ensure it all happened. Go for it!

“What a day!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

Wasn't sure about this adventure or the value for $. However, it was great. An enthusiastic team who love their country, great organisation of logistics, food good and at the right times. Beautiful bus trip from Taumarunui to Whangamomona, nice coffee from friendly folk at the pub, then off on the carts through marvellous scenery with great input from Ian as guide. The tunnels were great. This should be one of the 20 great rail journeys - even though it is not a train now. Good instructions to bring warm clothes, and the blankets were very helpful. Only issue for me was the noise at times of the carts. The all day nature never felt too long. A winner! Clean bathroom stops too - than yu

“Scenic and comfortable trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2013

What a fantastic day out! I did the trip from Stratford to Whangamomona and enjoyed the ever changing landscape very much! Leaving Douglas (17 km from Stratford) at about 9.30 we arrived in Whangamomona at 12.30 to have a one hour stop for lunch in the hotel. It can get pretty cold during the trip, but with three layers including Merino it wasn't that bad. Top speed of the carts is 20 km/hr so there's plenty of opportunity to take pictures during the trip. Moreover our knowledgable and friendly guide Carol allowed us to stop anywhere we wanted and she stopped every now and then to point out places of interest. Back in Douglas at about 4.30 I had a big smile on my face: this is an absolute must-do! Unfortunately the season is over now, I will have to wait till November to be able to do a trip from the other end, Taumaranui down to Whangamomona. Look forward to doing that already!

“Twenty Tunnel Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

If you are a rail buff then this is something I recommend you do before you die!! Twenty tunnels, spectacularly rugged scenery, knowledgeable guide (Maree) all add up to a fantastic experience.
