We come down from the big city a couple of times a year for a long walk along West Wittering beach followed by lunch at The Ship. The former is still wonderful and alas the latter is not.
Don't know if there's been a change of management or simply they've got complacent but this place is a shadow of it's former self.
We arrived on time for our 1pm booking and stood around the 'wait to be seated' area. 4 or 5 staff walked past avoiding my eye contact so that they didn't have to deal with me. A simple 'I'll get someone to attend to you' is all one of these jobsworths would have to have said. In the end we got seated by a charming lady who we didn't see again. We were then waited on by 3 or 4 different young staff who ranged from utterly disinterested through to pretty brusque. We waited for ages for the food (like about half an hour) and things arrived in all over the place (mains before starters etc). The meal took about an three quaters of an hour longer than it should have.
Also gone down hill. Fish and chips were greasy, roast lamb was incredibly chewy (duff quality rather than overcooked), rest of it was ok.
So deeply disappointing and we now need to find somewhere else to go for lunch on our family days out.
Ps. Completely my fault but I also left a brand new North Face bodywarmer on the back of my chair. Given that by the time we left the only other occupied table in the restaurant was by very old age pensioners, i thought there was a very likely chance of getting it back. I rang when I got back home and then again the next day but the waiting staff had not found it, which surprised me.
