“Enjoyed the food.”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

My wife and I spent a couple of days in the Kippford area earlier this month and visited The Anchor twice during our visit. On both occasions we were pleased with the standard of food and service provided.

Some previous reviews had left me wondering what to expect of the place but I am happy to report that the food was both high in quality as well as quantity. As for service, it runs like many pubs, you get a table with a number and order your food at the bar - outside of that I found the staff to be very pleasant. The prices of food were nothing out of the ordinary either - no meal on the main menu was above £12 (excluding steaks etc).

I should also add that they had two or three real ales on draught; I know that this is important to certain people.

We would not hesitate to call in again if we were in the area.

I stayed at the Anchor hotel over the New Year period and had a wonderful stay. The management and staff were so friendly, as are the locals. It is a busy place but staff go out of their way to ensure all people got served at the bar. My wife and I had a great time and cannot thank Robert and Sharon enough for their welcome.

Room Tip: If you are a couple ask for room 2

Stayed in a lovely rented house over new year with friends and booked "the local" for our Hogmanay meal. We were met at reception by a young lady who pointed to the door of the restaurant and told us our table was in there to the left! Our table was positioned right next to the bar and when we asked to order drinks the young girl stood behind the bar and took our order. Bottle of wine and drinks were left on the bar and after 10 mins we asked if we could have our drinks, yes help yourself was the reply. Our food order was also taken from the lady behind the bar. The only time we saw any of the staff venture out from behind the bar was to serve our food and to clear away the plates. I have never been in a restaurant with such terrible customer service. The menu was far too extensive and of very poor standard, froozen chips with everything and the Puddings were microwaved. Definitely wont be back.

Four of us, after a superb walk around this beautifully area, had a meal around 4pm in this plain but welcoming pub/hotel.
We were concerned that following on from the departure of a 'party' around twenty people the staff and chef would be passed their best but we were not disappointed.
The staff were helpful and friendly and the pub food was delicious. Too much on our plate was our only negative comment!
Just what we had been looking for after our walk.
We'll be back to this venue again.

Peaceful location with views of the bay. Excellent walk to Rockcliffe and on to Sandyhills if feeling energetic. Excellent food, with an obvious good reputation, with no seats available in the bar and lounge after 6pm on the Friday and Saturday. Good beers. Very helpful polite staff

Just returned from a blustery golf tour in the Solway Firth area of Scotland and enjoyed 2 nights of very good hospitality in Kippford's Anchor Inn. We were recommended by a friend who has a holiday home a few miles away and who regularly dines here.
We were a party of 7 golfers.
The bedrooms are far better than we expected and offered exceptional value for money for a pub with accommodation. All the rooms were clean with decor in keeping and had decent views over the river and were well provisioned with tea coffee biscuits, mints, towels, bathroom products etc, showers that were hot and offered a decent flow of water, heating that worked etc etc
One of our party is the owner of a 4 star hotel bar and restaurant and like the rest of us was very impressed with the quality choice and volume of the food served as well as a first class choice of reasonably priced quality wines.
Breakfast was freshly cooked and served with a smile by the very helpful and hard working owner Sharon.
The bar had atmosphere and is clearly popular with the locals. We did notice that all those in the know did not bother with starters such were sizes of the portions!!!
If you are thinking of staying in the area this is the one to beat!!!
