We absolutely LOVED our (too short) time at the Ballykine House. The house itself is a 200 year old Guinness lodge up on a hillside overlooking the villages of Cong and Clonbur, and Lough Mask. We got in quite late and were greeted by Mrs. Lamb, the lovely hostess. She offered us tea and cake to "shake the dust of the road off" before showing us our room.
The accommodations were astounding - comfortably decorated with all the modern amenities, and an ensuite bath. In the morning we walked around the grounds which are gorgeous - a historic wall surrounds the property, as do arbors and benches. Breakfast was personally served by Mrs. Brown in a comfortable breakfast room, and she was more than happy to give us recommendations for things to do in the area. We spent a whole day just sitting in the garden or lazing around in bed - a very comfortable place.
The Ballykine House's location is actually quite near the county lines of County Mayo, Galway, and Connemara. It makes a marvelous home base for visiting any of these three locations. If your travels take you into this area, you'd be losing out if you didn't try to get a room here.More
