Back to Basics Adventures is a top-notch dive shop offering boutique service. it is a small shop with only one boat so you dont get lost in the crowd. Jenny & Rupert and their excellent staff take great care of you. We were there in low season when the weather was cooler - and so was the water! B2B hooked us up with some extra thermal protection to make the dives more comfortable.

This shop is perfect for everyone from the total novice diver to the experienced diver. The reefs are healthy and the fish are plentiful and of huge variety. We got to see things we hadnt seen before like a guitar shark. And we were there on the off season to experience the whale migration. We saw whales on every dive day on the surface and heard them on every day except our last underwater. There is something magical about diving to whale song.

The outer reefs are more technical as they are quite deep and a nitrox cert is recommended to extend your dive times. (28% typical to accommodate the depths.)

It is worth noting that this is boat diving, ie not dock diving. You help launch the boat off the beach and then have to get yourself into it. At the end of the dive you also have to get yourself back into the boat - with help! My arms honestly hurt at the end of 8 days, but it was absolutely worth it.

I would not recommend this locale for an adaptive diver as everything from the sand streets, steps, and general lack of accommodation would make diving very difficult.

Pro-tips: If you are coming from SA it is perfectly safe to leave your car at the border - they will let you take it across to transfer luggage. We left our car for 9 days and only paid US$30 in parking. Jenny will hook you up with Izaak to get you a ride from the border into town.
If you are staying somewhere with a kitchen, do your shopping in Manguzi before you cross the border. MZN doesnt get excited about fresh fruit & veggies crossing the border and groceries are slim in Ponta.
Cafe del Mar and Kaya Kweru by the shop have good food AND wifi but Mango is the best place with the best view for bfast or lunch (but no wifi). Most restaurants are closed at least one day a week so dont get caught by that.

A friend and I did our first Discovery Dive at Back to Basics with Amelie as our instructor. The atmosphere was chilled with every step seen as making good progress with encouragement and support. On our first day there it was raining so we did the theory and pool session, on day 2 we hit the ocean with a group of experienced divers. We went down together but Amelie was just focussed on the two of us, checking we were ok and pointing out things to see. We were lucky enough to see a white tipped reef shark, a blue spotted ray, and lots of colourful fish. A really great intro experience with staff who were caring and relaxed but always professional. I Highly recommended Back to Basics, and will be using them next time in Ponta.

I had an amazing couple of days with the lovely back to basics family! Just finished an exciting and incredibly tough rescue diver course with Amelie and Rupert, two insanely talented dive instructors who made the experience hard to forget. Back to Basics is my go to dive centre in Ponta Douro because they create such a humble and fun diving environment. Hope to see them all again soon!

Did several dives and were al great.

Our three kids (11, 12 and 13 years old) did three discovery dives, one in the pool and two in the ocean. They found this really great and this was also thanks to the care of Amelie (!!), Jenny and Rupert. After our dive we received a large amount of great photos from Jenny, as she brings here camera with light and all that, resulting in the coolest pictures ever (and no: they don't charge your for this).

I have never written a review before, but this was so good and much appreciated that we feel we must write this.

Thanks again Amelie, Jenny and Rupert! We will definitely come back in Ponta and dive with you again!!! Our kids found this the absolute highlight of our trip!

Regards, Remko and family

We have just come back from a holiday which included a week diving with Back to Basics in Ponta. We visited as a family; my husband and I had dived before but not for nearly 20 years and our teens (18 and 15) had never dived before. Back to Basics were absolutely amazing. We did a refresher course and the teens did their Open Water course with Amelie, who has to be the most enthusiastic and encouraging dive instructor in the world - everything was awesome!! Jen and Rupert joined us for the dives and they were equally enthusiastic and so professional. Jen was incredibly knowledgable about everything and pre and post dive briefings were amazing. We were lucky enough to dive with a pod of dolphins on our first dive and saw a whale and her calf, a school of around 100 rays, turtles and masses and masses of beautiful fish and sea lIfe. I would recommend Back to Basics without hesitation. Every aspect of the experience was brilliant and we will definitely be back for more. Lynne, Simon, Archie and Joe Moore, UK.
