“Beautiful historic apartment”
Reviewed June 12, 2017 for a stay in May 2017

We very much enjoyed staying a few days in this beautiful and carefully restored historic apartment. The main room in particular is magnificent. Our sleep was broken however by the noise of sea gulls on the roof over the main bedroom in the early hours of the morning. Also there were a number of irritating minor faults, such as door handles falling off and blown light bulbs. These were dealt with promptly when reported.

“Amazing restored building to stay in”
Reviewed February 19, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

Booked via Trip Advisor rentals. No issues. An amazing fantastically restored property to stay in. Exactly as the pictures showed. The full width middle floor room was beautiful yet cosy. Beautiful beach at Kinghorn (when the tide is out), 40 minutes to Edinburgh by car (or on train - every 20 minutes - station approx 500 yards), St Andrews 30 minutes by car and Cairngorms just over an hour, so a great location to explore from. Not many places to eat in Kinghorn itself (1 restaurant) but plenty of lovely restaurants at kirkcaldy only two miles away. A really amazing building to stay in to use as a base to explore from. Beautiful to return to on a night.

“Wow - what a special property”
Reviewed November 4, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We stayed at Kinghorn Town Hall for October half term and were wowed when we arrived. The entrance itself is magnificent and the rest of the building doesn't disappoint. The building is vast and grand whilst being cosy and homely at the same time.

The kitchen was well equipped (although it may be a good idea to leave one of the cupboards free for guests food items) and the welcome pack of bread, wine (thank you!) etc was lovely. Although it's a big old building it was well heated with plenty of hot water. Toiletries/towels etc were good quality and plenty of them.

The kids loved it - they called it 'the castle' - and especially loved the 'spooky staircase'. The only negative comment I have is the (very heavy) door knobs kept falling off which is not only very noisy but could be painful if they were to land on a foot! These things are to be expected in a building of this age but probably should be looked at which is the only reason I mention it.

Kinghorn itself is a lovely little place with a handy Co-op and little tea room just a short stroll away. There is also a nice little pub / restaurant directly opposite which we didn't try but gets good reviews.

Thank you for a lovely stay - we will definitely be back.

Thanks for your lovely review Nikki and I am delighted that you and your family enjoyed the stay at Kinghorn Town Hall. It is such a special building, with a lot of character. I am sorry about the door knobs, I will have a look into this, and look at re-arranging the kitchen cupboards. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Beth, Fife Historic Buildings Trust

“Certainly different.....”
Reviewed June 14, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

If you are looking for somewhere unusual or different to stay....this place certainly is a good contender. We first stayed here in March 2104 and although the weather was cold and wet , we enjoyed our holiday. Sadly, things were not as good second time around. The standards of cleanliness were not we remembered and we had to do a lot cleaning when we first arrived before we could settle. Maintenance had also been neglected, There were several pieces of broken furniture that needed repair /replacement, light bulbs that needed replacing, door handles that fell off, and rain leaked through the ceiling in one of the bedrooms toward the end of our stay... Lots of little things that, whilst not of major importance, added up to being a nuisance and potential for spoiling our stay. There is one real problem that needs to urgent attention, it is the lack of proper ventilation in the bedrooms... there are opening roof lights in two of the bedrooms, but these couldn't be opened due to the presence of seagulls nesting on the roof and the danger of their droppings and waste getting into the rooms possibly causing illness!! The main bedroom has no opening windows or roof light so no means of ventilation at all.. but again, the risk of bird waste getting into the room would be the same as the other bedrooms...

The one thing that really did spoil our stay at the Town Hall, was the noise that the seagulls made through out the night when we tried to sleep...!!! They used the roof as a meeting place and their constant bird calls and seeming 'pitched battles' were no joke after 5 nights of disturbed sleep... so unless you are bird lover... this is not the place to stay..

Apart from that - you could enjoy your stay....

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your stay. We are sorry that your break was not everything you had hoped for. We are really disappointed to hear that we have not meet the high standards which we aspire to, especially when we have had so many recent 5-star reviews. We would very much have wanted you to enjoy the same ‘5-star’ experience.

I have fed back your points about cleanliness to our housekeepers and put in place tighter quality control to ensure our high standards are met. I have also asked our housekeepers to make sure the apartment is well-ventilated during a change-over, to ensure the apartment is well-aired for guests’ arrival. The apartment is housed in a beautiful historic building, which does mean that there were some design limitations when it came to renovating the building, and period features, such as the high ceilings, made the installation of opening windows in the main room difficult.

We are grateful to you for letting us know about the other maintenance points, and indeed for tackling some of the repairs, and will ensure these are fixed.

The downside to our lovely coastal location is the seagulls. However we do have measures in place to deter them. There are spikes on the roof to prevent them nesting, and we have recently installed two decoy owls as further deterrent. We have a roofer coming out next week to fix the leak and to see what more can be done to deter the seagulls

We are sorry once again that your stay did not live up to expectations and are addressing the points you raise as a matter of urgency to ensure future guests are happy and comfortable.

“Beautiful place”
Reviewed September 18, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

I felt that the facility was very unique. I even enjoyed the sea quills waking me up in the morning. A wonderful way to start the day.
We had some wonderful bread, a bottle of wine waiting for us.
There was also a very nice bouquet of a flowers that lasted for most of my stay. (over 1 wk).
I loved the towel warmer.

“Fit for a King”
Reviewed July 5, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We stayed here for our annual family holiday and know fife area very well as we come every year and have seated in several holiday homes over the years. Firstly it's an ideal location across from a friendly pub, a beautiful beach only minutes away, 5 minutes to the station to get the train into Edinburgh or a 45 minute drive in the other direction to St Andrews. Now for the house: wow, we all loved it's size, it's comfort and it's quirkiness. Although you have to access the garden seperately, it didn't stop us sitting in it in the sunshine to enjoy a bottle of wine and a family BBQ too. We look forward to returning next year

It's like staying in your own fort! Very nicely fitted out, quality bedding, fully stocked kitchen etc. Excellent value for money. Lounge area is just stunning and the whole place is just so full of character, even has a 2nd stone spiral staircase. Feel very lucky to have found this place, many thanks
