“Mothers Day lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2011

The Grove has been refurbished yet again, and has another new and friendly landlord and lady. Very nicely decorated, welcoming and extremely busy. We all had traditional sunday lunch, which was piping hot and well cooked. Dessert was delicious.

We visited this pub last Christmas to meet friends as it was a central location. We were rewarded with a really wonderful experience and a great meal, lovely festive ambiance, great menu choices and good service. We were really happy that we had found a true gem that was not overly expensive and were happy to recommend it to everyone we knew. Another visit in the New Year was an equally good experience so we couldn't wait to repeat it this Christmas with a bigger family group but alas we found that things had changed Has the pub has changed hands or something, as the set up certainly has? It is now just a pub serving food as opposed to the nice restaurant it was. I can't find any reference to change of management or ownership online so I can only assume it's still in the same hands, but the warm personal welcome has gone, along with assistance to table, taking coats etc. which was extended to us on our earlier visit. It has reverted to being a pub rather than a restaurant with no sign of an owner or manager during our visit just a couple of young staff for the bar and all the tables.
Our coats ended up in a big pile on the floor or on the chair back as there were no longer any pegs anywhere to hang them on, menus had been replaced with laminated cards and the carpet needed a good vacuum. All the glasses appeared dirty, being both streaky and cloudy (dishwasher bloom) including wine glasses brought to the table. The main food choice was a carvery. We were taken aback ..... what had happened to our lovely restaurant and the great menu choices?
On the plus side the meal was actually OK. The carvery turned out to be better than anticipated given the initial bad general impression, nice thick slices of meat and lots of vegetable choices. There were a few oddities like red cabbage which had been heavily peppered and the condiments were bog standard supermarket variety instead of all the wonderful home made chutneys, sauces and accompaniments of the previous year. It was an OK meal for the price even if it wasn't what we had been expecting. Some of the vegetable choices were great (cauliflower gratin and cheesy leeks for instance) but one or two things let it down by being cold, chewy, or skimped like the parsnip (yes singular!) and one biscuit per person on the cheese board.
The Bar staff served drinks the wrong (cloudy) glasses while the first bottle of merlot wine couldn't be repeated when a second was ordered! Bizarre and smacked of some scam or other. Nit picking? Maybe so, but I think it's necessary to point out to those people who, like us, had a fantastic previous experience here and are expecting the same next visit, that things have definitely changed and not for the better. If that is the type of food you want then you will not be disappointed, but there was nothing left here of our original experience to justify a special journey. I'm not saying it isn't value for money or that a carvery set up is bad - it's just not special and not the wonderful menu or service that it was on our last visit less than a year ago. In the end it was an acceptable inexpensive roast but I would rather have paid a lot more for the type of mouthwatering menu previously on offer than have a cheap and cheerful pub meal that we could get easily in many other places. We were gutted at the loss of a really good eatery.

We stayed at the hotel on 7th November 2009.
That night we were enchoraged to play their quiz night, we did and we won!
£257 to be exact!
A couple of people in the pub told me not to accept a cheque from Dave the owner, I thought they were joking!
He said that he did not have the cash handy (even though everyone paid cash?!?!)
We accepted a cheque the next morning, paid the £130 bill for the rooms and food and left.
A week later the cheque bounced! After calling the owner he pursuaded us to represent it, it bounced again!

We have now demanded payment or legal action will follow...

It seems I am not the first to comment on 'Disshonest Dave'
I do not trust him so wont be staying again, I would be very cautious with credit cards at this place.

If only he was not there and they paid what they owed it would be a good hotel!

We stayed at the Grove Arms for 1 night en route to join friends in Cornwall. The stay was pleasant enough and the staff we dealt with were good.

However on my return home, when I checked my bank statement I noticed that I had been charged twice by the Grove Arms. I checked my receipts and I had signed for both sets of charges, duh. I spoke to the owner over the telephone and explained the problem. "No problem, we will refund the money" he said.

After about 8 weeks nothing - still no refund. I have emailed and telephoned many times and still nothing. Dave the owner does not return calls or emails.

No way to run a business!!!

Friendly welcome, found the room somewhat "basic" and not very warm; but it is a pub rather than a hotel and the rooms are for sleeping in rather than sitting around in. Bed was comfortable enough; the dinner was very passable, reasonable value for good quality food. The breakfast (inclusive in room rate) however was spectacular. The kitchen was very accommodating to our timing and menu requirements. The food served was undoubtedly local, perhaps even from their garden, and the bread and preserves were probably home made. I would have been proud to have served up such a breakfast in my own home and after a lifetime travelling the world in All Star hotels I have never been served a finer.

we found this inn on booking.com and were amazed at how cheap it was - we had booked the night before and it was out of tourist season so it was on offer for half price. luckily there was one review on trip advisor that reassured us that this place was going to be okay. the inn is very well presented - it looks like it may have been renovated fairly recently so it looks very clean and fresh. the rooms are not huge but adequate for our needs and the bathroom is a decent size. our room was at the front so we had a little bit of road noise but not enough to cause any problems i.e we sleep like logs. we had a meal at the restaurant and the prices range from 10-15 pounds for a main - we were very pleased with the meal [chef was voted best chef in salisbury for 2008] and the staff and chef were lovely. breakfast was amazing - couldn't believe that this came as part of the room rate.
all in all we were very happy with this inn and we both agreed that we would happily pay full price for this room and still feel like we had got a very good deal.
