Scuba Junkie Mabul Beach Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 15, 2014

My husband and I booked the 6D5N Sipadan package with Scuba Junkie on Mabul Island and we had the best time! We were immediately impressed by the Semporna office staff who greeted us warmly upon our arrival and clearly explained what to do the next day for our boat dives and transfer to the island. Once we arrived at Mabul Beach Resort, again we received excellent service and clear instructions as to how the resort operates and where to be at what time for meals and dives. Our Deluxe air-con room was clean and comfortable, with a lovely balcony and hammock! Possibly what impressed us the most were the dive guides and staff in general. There is a real culture at Scuba Junkie of loving diving and loving marine life. It just shows on everyone. The staff have a ball and there is a true sense of community there. The owners are obviously passionate about responsible diving and this is what makes Scuba Junkie such a pleasure to be a part of for a few days! Big cheers to our wonderful guides, especially Red who managed to get us 3 days in a row! Guide to diver ratios are usually kept small and on some dives we were lucky enough to have one guide per diver! Sipadan was certainly amazing (but you already know that from the thousands of other internet sources) but that is not to dismiss the other world-class dive sites at Mabul, Kapalai, Sipadan Barrier Reef and our other favourite island Siamil. In fact, there was such great variety of dive sites that we never dived the same site twice in our 6 days. The dive boats are excellent and the gearing up /packing up process made very easy by the efficient jetty staff. We made lots of new friends over dive trips and mealtimes and are already planning our return to this wonderful place. It was a most welcome relief at the end of our 4 week holiday in Malaysia to be in a place where staff filled us with such confidence that we could relax and do what we were there to do… eat, sleep and dive! Make sure you do book a couple of months in advance though, as they were mostly fully booked while we were there in January.

Room Tip: I was glad we had booked the air-con room, however the weather was not as hot as I was expecting so...

Excellent place, perfect cleanliness, friendly staff, tasty food, beautiful dive sites. Best place in mabul!
Just make sure to book well in advance and try to get a permit for sipadan. It's definitely worth it!

We stayed at the dorm for 4 days (1 at the dorm in Semporna), we were two divers and one non-diver. The dorm room was really nice with comfortable beds and fine bathrooms.

The first night in the dorm room in Semporna I woke up with bites on my right shoulder and arm (I have bedbugs before so I was pretty sure this was it). When we came to Mabul we probably took the bedbugs with us because with saw them again the day after - I told the manager and he said they did a lot to prevent this but he would send some one over ASAP. The next day we found a dead one so this have helped. This is always annoying to deal with but it does effect my review that much because they did something about it so fast - now they just need to check the hostel in Semporna.

One of the other things that doesn't make this a excellent stay was the food. It was good - most of the time. The breakfast was standard with white bread, noodles and rice - which might not be the best way to start a long diving day.
The dinners were good but not varied.
Before we came to SJ we mailed with them and kept asking if they did anything special for christmas (wrote this in three emails) but they didn't answer that. We assumed they did something and they did - just not the 24th but the 25th when we already left - too bad.

I will still rate them Very Good because the staff, diving, place, accommodation was really good. I would choose this if I ever go again.

Everything is very well organized. You wake up eat, dive, snack, dive, lunch, dive then dinner. Everything is set up to maximize you time there. The food is delicious it's like eating a home cooked meal. The rooms are beautiful and super clean. The pictures of the rooms don't do them any justice. The staff is super helpful and friendly. From the moment you e-mail them they are ready to help and answer all of your questions. My husband and I really enjoyed our 4 days and 3 nights there. Dives were amazing we really enjoyed them. If you want to dive in Sipidan make sure you book early since they only have 7 permits per day. I believe we booked our dive to Sipidan 3 months in advance. We met a couple who had booked them 9 months in advance. If you book with Scuba Junkie you wont be disappointed.

Room Tip: We were in room 3 and it was perfect.

I stayed at the resort for three days and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The diving is excellent and brilliantly organised. I had such a great time on the boats and in the water. The dive staff were excellent, especially Nasi Goreng and Jason whose passion and enthusiasm really added to my experience. They provided entertainment and an atmosphere on the boats that kept the energy levels high all day long and even when you're sitting in the bar afterwards.

The food was great. They really go out of their way to provide you with a good variety of dishes and cater for vegetarians too. The resort is a very sociable place, with a bar upstairs where you can relax and enjoy a few drinks after a long day of diving. They also have band nights where the resident band will entertain you with covers of the most popular songs! I think it would be great if they had a resident masseuse too. Maybe even film nights or something. There are so many opportunities at the wonderful place.

I stayed in the dormitory for one night. Although it was clean and comfortable, it was far too hot for my liking and the fans did nothing to cool me down. I know this is a common issue with dorms in hot countries, that's why I try to avoid them. If there are two of you it's worth spending an extra 25RM each more to get a private chalet as they are really comfortable, have huge bathrooms and wonderful balconies to relax.

The biggest problem I had was with one of the western staff members who talked to the Malay staff in a very unprofessional manner. I felt uncomfortable on several occasions when I happened to be in the same area at the time. One moment occurred just after breakfast and I was sitting in the restaurant talking with a couple of other guests and this man started berating the Malay kitchen staff for using butter instead of margarine through the kitchen hatch. This should be done in private and out of customers' hearing.

All in all, I would most certainly go back if I'm lucky enough to be in the area again!

Room Tip: The dormitories were too hot for me. I was sleeping on a top bunk which didn't get anything fro...

Spent four nights on Mabul and got blown away! Took the open water dive course with my boyfriend. Had an amazing time with great enviroment, really good staff (the best teacher!) & good food.

The diving spots are wonderful and you get to see a lot of sea creatures. At our first dive (awas) we got to see Green turtles for example.

The while time there was great and would love to go back!

We went for three days and did snorkeling and it was great also just for that. Good food, great staff and lovely local community! We had the great chance to see sea turtles hatch and be released in the sea, such a great experience:))
