Scuba Junkie Mabul Beach Resort

I took my Dive master course with Scuba junkie after reading many reviews as to where to go. The Dm course at scuba junkie is well thought out and you learn from a hand full of instructors through out the course rather than just having one instructor the whole time. it makes for such a good learning environment. you are involved in all aspects of being a dive guide, from morning boat set up and preparing a spares kit to proper briefings including knowledge of the marine environment. you gain confidence through out the course by observing other guides and eventually guiding real divers, with the assistance of a guide, not just other students. This experience sets you up to be a great dive guide.

The resort in Mabul is first class, the rooms are very spacious and well looked after. Caris or Rohan, the managers, are always available to help out with any information you may need. the daily diving is well organised and the gear is in good condition. the staff is a mix of westerners and malaysians, which all work well together. the house reef right in front of the resort is one of the best on the island with a large number of tiny critters to see in a well laid out house reef of man made structures which have become home to theses amazing reef creatures over the years.

The bar at scuba junkie is by far the best atmosphere on Mabul after dark. many divers and staff meet in the bar to talk about the daily dives and fill in log books. this makes for a nice evening activity and board games and cards are sometimes played. once a week a band comes from the main land and plays in the bar or on the beach. this is always a highlight and well enjoyed night by everybody.

Sipadan is a must if you are planning to dive in Borneo. The diving is just amazing. deep walls, huge schools of jacks, barracuda, loads of turtles, white tip reef sharks, schools bump head parrot fish, the list goes on and on. scuba junkie is the only dive operation that does 4 dives here every day. It does make for a full day and you end up very tired by the end but it is totally worth the unforgettable experience of Sipadan.

After looking back at my experience at scuba junkie i would not change a thing, scuba junkie mabul beach resort is a place all divers should experience for them selves.

We spent a night in a a/c double and a night in a fan room. Both were surprisingly large, clean and attractive, with big comfy beds and a decent sized desk. Loved the hammock and table and chairs outside on our veranda. The rooms fell much more upmarket than the semporna backpackers run bythe same company. The food was fine and there was lots of it- perfect when you spend most of the day diving! Tea and coffee were always available, as was filtered water. Meals were always accompanied by fruit. The resort refuses to serve seafood as they cannot guarantee it will be caught sustainably; I felt this was a nice touch. The diving was decent- with the highlight of course being Sipadan itself. Do book in advance if you want to dive this island as Scuba Junkies only receive a limited number of passes! Staff were friendly and helpful, and the DMs generally listened to our interests when selecting dive sites. Some DMs were better at spotting things than others, but we tended to have a different DM each day, and would occasionally combine groups to make the most of an individual's macro hunting skills. Do sign up for the night dive- this is 100RM extra but was one of my favourites. I would happily go back here and wish I could have stayed longer and dived more!

Room Tip: A/C rooms are away from the village. The fan rooms have the village behind them- not a big deal but...

there is nothing pretentious or fake about this resort. You will experience the best diving of your life, eat well and make great friends well the staff and instructors take excellent care of you. you will grow extremely strong bonds with the other guests as you challenge yourself. one caveat is non drivers need not apply as there is very little to do on this island besides scuba.I would trust my children to the instructors and the beaches are kept in pristine condition.

From my first email, Scuba Junkie were fantastic. They organised all my travel and diving needs from the time I touched down in Tawao, until I took off at the end of the trip. The prices are very reasonable, especially given the quality of diving. I was lucky enough to see Hammerheads at Sipadan, the most expensive day off our trip, but still ridiculously cheap in comparison to other world class sites. Its great to do a mix of Sipadan and the other Islands......the macro life around Mabul/Kapalai is a paradise for critter hunters.
Remember to book early for Sipadan. There is much criticism about the limited number of permits available, but that helps to keep Sipadan unspoilt. If you book early, you can get the days you need. There are all sorts of different packages available, to suit everyones needs.....you do have to dive a certain amount of days around the other Islands to qualify for a Sipadan permit.....so plan well.
The dive masters are very safety conscious, and professional. They are also very keen, and seem to have a genuine love for what they do. They will always help you complete your log books, and most nights we talked for hours about what we saw over a beer in the bar. It is quite a big operation now. I dived with them first in 2009, when it was a bit smaller, however it does not seem to have lost its friendly personable touch. There is a dive master for every taste.....if you get one you like, you can request to dive with them again. The manager Carys bends over backwards to accommodate the guests needs. I am quite an experienced diver, and did not take any courses with them, however I spoke to other guests who were doing courses, and they were all very happy with their instructors.
The standard of accommodation has risen since my last visit. I have stayed in my own room, and in the dorm. The dorms are very handy for the budget conscious.....some of the best I have seen.....but it always depends on who you are sharing with. This time I stayed in my own bungalow. The bed was big and soft, and the bathroom was of a good standard. There is a hammock on the balcony, very nice for a snooze after a good days diving.
The food is a lot better than I was lead to believe. Yes its simple, self service buffet, but its perfectly adequate, and nutricious. I spent extra money on a couple of nights and eat at some of the more swanky resorts next door. I have to say that the quality was not much better, and the cost was sooooo much more expensive. They do have a policy of not serving seafood. I do love seafood, but have to say that I fully understand the reasoning behind it. They believe that the fishing in the area is not being done sustainably, so it would be unethical to support the industry that is doing serious damage to the ecosystem.
This fits in with a lot of the eco work that they do. They have won numerous awards for both their diving, and eco friendly dive resort. Unlike many of their competitors, they use solar panels, treat their sewage and have a no glove policy for the guests. Having seen so many dive spots around the world ruined by bad divers this is very refreshing. They hold beach and reef cleans as well. They encourage guest participation, it was great to put something back in.
When I was there, the manager Rohan held presentations on both Shark awareness, and Turtles. Very interesting, and fun.
So all in all a great trip......looking forward to coming back again. Highly recommended.

I just came back from my 7 visit at Mabul, and i know its not my last time. Scuba Junkie's beach resort is just a perfect place to go if you want to experince Borneo's significant marine life. The Staff at the resort are so nice and helpfull, and they really makes you feel very welcome. The divestaff is very qualified and are experts in finding rare fish that you don't see many places in the world.
The food at the resturant is very good, and there is fresh fruit every day! Even my 2 year old daughter loved the food there. The rooms are very nice and clean, and you feel like you stay at very expensive hotel, but the price is very good!!. We spent hours sitting at the hammock at the balcony. Before i travelled there by my self, but this time a brought my family. Its the perfect place both for familys and travellers. If you want to meet new people the resturant and the bar is perfect for that but if you just want to spent some family time there is also plenty of room for that. The beach is keept very clean and is very child friendly too. Diving or snorkling just outside the resort is fantastic and worth going back for.
I really only have good things to say about Scuba Junkies beach resort and the staff there. Everyone I have recomended it too loves it just as much as i do.

And extra thing i love too is that Scuba Junkie do so much for the locals and the enviroment. Fx. Shark sanctuary, turtle hatchery, reef cleans ect. Its just fantastic to experince such a commitment to the marine life.

The resort is placed just at the beach and at the jetty my daughter experinced a huge turtle swimming by 3 times. As you can imagin she still talkes about it.

So to sum up:

Rooms: 5 stars -clean - VERY nice and very big
Staff: 5 starts -So helpfull and know so much about the marine life and the locals at mabul too.
Surroundings (beach ect:) 5 stars - keept so clean and nice and the garden too.
Food: 5 stars. -Very tastefull, both malay food and western food. -Lots of fresh fruit.
-and they have a band night once a week too!

All in all a great place wich have my best recomandations. !!

Considering it was high season and how busy the place was, I felt everything at Scuba Junkie was very well run and organised. Everything is taken care of for you. The resort is very chilled and has a nice atmosphere. The food was much better than I had expected. The rooms are clean and spacious. Good value considering the food is included. Staff are friendly and helpful and the diving is simply top-notch. I was also impressed with their eco-friendly efforts doing beach cleans, shark presentations, turtle hatchery and trying to educate the locals about the environment. Overall can't fault the place, but definitely book your Sipadan permits nice and early cos this place gets booked out fast. I can see why!

The resort is owned and managed by Scuba Junkie. Its interesting that it is next door to a favella and then that is next door to the top end resort.

Locationally, its just a short walk to the jetty with the area clean and safe to be shoeless for the whole stay!

I stayed in a bungalow with air conditioning and was surprised that I was also supplied with a floor fan and attached a huge ceiling fan. The bed was comfortable enough , although after diving, I don't think I have complained sleeping on a bed of nails... the shower was bit of a disappointment as it was more of a dribble, however I've been places where the shower wasn't hot, so I guess this was a bonus. Outside the bungalow, you get your own hammock which is a nice touch.

Rooms are cleaned on a need be basis.

Reception is open from 7:30 to 6pm, and offers a basic and effecient service.

Food provided, as part of the buffet, is basic and mass cooked, however don't be down heartened by this... the food is hearty and prepared with flavour in mind...whilst I was there I don't think I saw one person NOT go up for seconds for breakfast lunch and dinner!

Tea & Kopi are always available (with a can of condensed milk on the side).... this always goes down well with the break time/tea times served with home made donuts and cakes!

On Mabul Island, there isn't a great deal of choices for accommodation, but I would say this resort is definitely value for money for DIVERS only as an additional cost is associated to non divers.
