“Small but beautiful”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

Modern artistic display tells the story of a long extinct people who inhabited the area in biblical times. Allow one to three hours - depending on how much archaeological displays and historical facts you can enjoy.

“Really nice place to visit”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

Tucked away, this museum is well-worth looking out for. Very attractive, with exhibits in palatable chunks, making it easier to digest the information. Nice interactive exhibits to keep kids amused. Worth visiting!

“An interactive look at an ancient culture”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

The museum is open seven days a week. There is no food for sale, but there is free cold drinking water. The entire building including the toilets are fully wheelchair-accessible.

The Corinne Mamane Museum of Philistine Culture in Ashdod has recently undergone a serious renovation. The first, entry floor, includes many exhibits regarding the conquests, history and daily lives of the Philistines, starting in the 12th Century B.C.E. (3,000 years ago). It is very interesting to follow the museum's exhibits while learning about whom the Bible describes as Israel's fiercest enemy. Their garments, ritualistic tools, musical instruments, sarcophagi, and various pottery suggest a well-developed civil society, one not devoted entirely to warfare and conquering other countries.

The explanatory exhibits are interactive, meaning there are enough buttons to push and displays lighting up to keep children happy as well. Equal space is given to Hebrew and English. Instead of having to read through long explanations, you simply press on the facet of life you wish to read about, and get a short, well-written, illustrated explanation.

The ground floor contains Jewish amulets and ritual objects, such as invocations against the evil eye and artistic ketubot (traditional Jewish wedding contracts). A second room has been set up for Philistine feasts, which you have to order in advance.

There is no actual gift shop yet, but the ticket seller has a few souvenirs for sale, such as t-shirts and replicas of Philistine drinking cups.

My wife and I spent close to two hours in the museum, but there is enough material there to warrant a second visit.

Opening hours:

Sun, Tue-Thu 9:00– 16:00
Mon. – 9:00 – 20:00
Fri. – 10:30 - 13:30
Sat. – 10:30 – 13:30

On holidays eves and holidays the museum is closed.
