“Jumping off point for Portofino peninsula”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

Recco has nothing to detain the visitor and can be safely ignored but the location of Hotel Elena makes up for it. A "find" for those seeking a relaxing modest hotel to explore the Portofino peninsula.

On arrival (by car) the priority is to secure a parking place. The hotel has two car parks, one at street level next to the main entrance, the other on the street below at beach level with access through a basement door. Frankly in this neck of the woods a car is a burden. For even if a hotel parking space is available on your return, parking is a nightmare in the whole area. It is best to abandon the thing and take to public transport. There are regular inexpensive trains and buses to the other nearby towns.

The reception staff are very friendly and could not be more helpful. Whilst the hotel is not a full service hotel, it is more of a upmarket B&B with a/c and direct views along Recco beach. If you do not wish to frequent local restaurants (not inspiring) and fortunate to have a room with a balcony upon which you can consume local take-away delicacies with incomparable views.

The hotel has its own private triangle of raked shingle with loungers and parasols. Swimming access is via steps from a sea wall. This is free for guests but there is no beach as such. Do not expect beach towels, so bring your own to lie on. However, the neighbouring privately maintained beach(?) - again expensively raked shingle, has a bar and restaurant, music and life guards etc. whilst sharing the same access for swimming (off the sea wall).

The guest rooms are peaceful and spotlessly clean. The breakfast buffet has a very good selection with substantial continental fare. There is acceptable bandwidth to the wifi available in the bar/restaurant/terrace area.

I would have no reservations of staying at the Elena again, it works very well as a jumping off point for the area. Santa Margherita Ligure is especially noteworthy.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony are preferable, especially to sip a cooling glass as the sinking sun's rays...

Great three star hotel with fantastic view of the beach in cental Recco. All you can ask for and super friendly service from manager Dominico and staff. Nice clean rooms with amazing harbour view. Parking in front of the hotel and free private beach in the back. If possible, ask for room on 2nd floor for the view. Breakfast was fantastic and stands out with good, healthy bread and fresh salami and italian cheese and not only croissants and sugary stuff. For a great pizza, pasta, foccacia meal, ask Dominico for a recommendation. Nice restaurant just by the railway bridge just 700 meters from the hotell and with discount if you ask the manager in advance. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: High floor for great view

My choice of Hotel Elena was idaeal. Despite the fact that Recco is not pretty town Hotel Elena is a good place to arrive by a car ( a parking lot is a big plus) and visit other towns by boat or bus.
Rooms are simple but the view recompenses everything. A tasty breakfast in the teracce is very relaxed. Single rooms don't have balconies - only window - and it is a small inconvenience but on the other hand if someone have more maney can book a double one.

We chose this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews, seeking a place from which Cinque Terre is readily assessible, and were not disappointed. The Cinque Terre villages themselves were heaving with people, whereas Recco was distant enough (a bit less than an hour by train) to be relatively quiet.
The hotel has good facilities and very helpful staff, also a limited amount of private parking. Our room was a bit on the small side and we'd have appreciated a bar fridge, but it was perfectly adequate for two or three nights and had a super view across the bay to the port.
Walking distance to a number of restaurants.

Room Tip: From what we could see, all the rooms have terrific harbour views.

The hotel Elena in Recco is a good alternative to staying in the Cinque Terre villages.
It is within 10 minutes walk of the station and trains take 40 minutes to Monterosso.
We stayed here at the end of spring and it was still too cold for swimming, I imagine in summer this hotel would be in an ideal location as the beach and pool is right on your doorstep.
The town of Recco is only small, but it boasts 25 Pizza and focaccia restaurants.
The rooms in the hotel all come with a balcony with views over the beach, rooms are not large and we had barely enough room for our suitcases. Breakfast is very good and can be taken on the terrace, overlooking the beach. If you are travelling here by car the hotel car park accommodates about 15 cars, and we never had a problem getting a space during our stay.

Overall the hotel was just what I wanted - great view over the mountains and the sea with a breakfast on a terrace. The hotel itself is very small and quiet, mostly elderly couples staying, which is perfect for a peaceful sleep, although the walls could still be thicker for a better sound-absorption. The stuff is very friendly, especially the receptionist (didn't manage to catch her name...), who was sweet and charming every day. We were given a room with a balcony, which again gave us a splendid view and an excellent opportunity to sunbath in mornings.
For down points I would mention poor English of the stuff in general (but that's a problem everywhere in Italy) and the old equipment in bathrooms, like the hairdryers, which clearly need to be replaced for smth more powerful.
