As a solo female traveller wanting to completely "unplug" and relax, a little beach front room at Pondok Baruna was exactly what the doctor ordered. For 25,000Rp/night (a mere AUD$25/night) during peak season, this simple little space was a bang-for-buck getaway.

Now don't be fooled. The beach front rooms are VERY simple- a double bed, air conditioning, a small bathroom with a cold water shower and a little deck with a cafe table is pretty much the extent of what you get. There's no tv, no phone for room service, no wifi and no bar fridge. My kind of heaven, however I'm sure it's some people's idea of hell.

The staff were excellent, the room was very clean, I felt safe at all times, and best of all every night I fell asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore mere meters from my room.

Room Tip: If you expect a 5 star hotel, stop being so tight with your money and pay for it.

There are 3 hotel properties by the same name - beach view , garden and frangipani . We were at the Beach View Rooms ! Excellent budget accommodation. They offer A/C , Good comfortable beds , Great views , Clean and spacious . Housekeeping done on a daily schedule . A little deck outside your room for enjoying the beautiful view. Hired a scooter from the hotel for 60K a day for a trip around the island.

On the flip side , the rooms could be better if there was a hot water kettle for tea/coffee.
Also they don't provide a soap in the room and we had to go out and buy one.

For Wifi and the swimming pool you have to go to the Garden rooms located 2 mins away , which is not an issue . Wifi signal was weak and breaking , but the staff said its because of the monsoon weather.Breakfast is good with Eggs/ Bread / Fruit and coffee.

Room Tip: There are only 4 beach view rooms , so plan to book ahead for budget travelers !

A budget room with a luxurious view overlooking the water! A clean room (ours was a little run down but for $25 a night with a comfy bed, a small bathroom and a little deck facing the water you can't complain!) a perfect option for budget travelers!

We stayed at the Frangipani part of the Pondok Baruna group. On Nusa Lembongan there is also Pondok Baruna Garden Rooms and Pondok Baruna Sea View Rooms. The one we stayed at was the newest of the three. We stayed some months ago and I'm writing this from some notes I jotted down at the time so apologies to management if there have been changes since.

Beds were very comfortable, the air conditioner worked well and the pool was very nice. The bathroom was huge but I'm not sure why as there was a lot of wasted space in here. Maybe a bath is going to be installed at a future date?? Be aware that there was no soap provided in the bathroom which was a bit of a surprise - especially for the bathroom sink (think hygiene).
Tea/coffee sachets were meagre and not replenished during our stay. We did have some tea of our own that we made do with.

The pool is exactly as shown on the web site and was a delight to swim in.
However the place could do with more seating around the pool; maybe not sun loungers as such, but tables/chairs/umbrellas for a chat with friends. There was one table in the garden at the rear of the property but this only had 2 chairs and did not look very inviting.

Breakfast was taken in a small café at the front of the property. It was a pretty sterile environment with nothing decorative to take you gaze while waiting for breakfast. It could get pretty warm in here as the door was often left open when staff went in and out to get orders. The food was prepared in a house at the back of the café and bought down into the café. It was delivered very in a very haphazard fashion with someone often finished before the other person's meal arrived. And sometimes taking way too long to arrive even when you were the only people there.

We often had problems with communication when ordering our breakfast. One morning we were told we couldn't order juice as the owner was sleeping and the machine would wake him! I hope this was miscommunication as it is no way to treat guests.
The wi-fi was laboriously slow with laptops timing out without connecting.

Be aware that there is no bar fridge in the rooms. We like to travel with some of our own supplies so this was an issue for us.

We stayed here for two nights in a garden room. The rooms were very clean - housekeeping done on a daily basis. The air con in the room worked well and kept as cool. Stunning pool area with plenty of chairs to soak up the sun. The staff were friendly and an okay breakfast was included. Close proximity to restaurants and snorkeling/diving tours. We will be back!
