Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Day Spa
Ranked #1 of 27 Hotels in Nusa Lembongan
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 1, 2008

This was our first trip to Bali, Indonesia and we were quite apprehensive that we hadn't booked accomodation on Bali mainland. Friends we spoke to hadn't even heard of Nusa Lembongan where the resort is located, much less Batu Karang resort.

We booked via the hotel website and it was an absolutely seamless experience. What we loved the most was the personal touch and the flexibility the staff offered. The resort actually looks exactly like the photos on the website and if you want to know what view you'll have when you get there, check out the pictures on their website. What you see is what you get.

As soon as we arrived, the staff were at hand and absolutely amazing. No attention to detail is missed out and Troy, the owner and manager is very hands on and personally always around to make sure you are well looked after. That's something that just blew our mind. The rest of the staff were also great and we really appreciated the friendly service. Simple touches such as addressing us by our names whenever we interacted with any of the staff felt exceptionally genuine and warm.

There's a lot of attention to detail across the resort, right from the power adaptors and ethernet cables placed in the drawer to the personal music volume control knob at the restaurant dining tables overlooking the sea. That's really amazing. The rooms are also so well maintained. Beds were really comfortable and rooms were made up every time we returned from an outing.
The open air bathrooms with sea views were exhilarating to say the least and the way they have been designed, shows how much thought has gone into the hotel layout and planning.

We loved everything about the place and we would definitely visit again without hesitation. This is my first trip advisor review and I couldn't do justice to the Batu Karang resort. Words escape me.

Great job Troy and team!!!

Regards
Rony & Priya (Elizabeth Jacob)

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your comments here on Trip Advisor. I am glad to hear that your holiday was everything you wanted it to be.

It is always great motivation to read the comments here on Trip Advisor. It helps to continue improving ourselves and to know we are doing a good job. Each month the comments are given to the staff to read so they know how they are doing as well.

The management was going to start a guestadvisor site to do reviews on guests and I can say that the staff would have you guys at the top of the ratings. Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us it was an absolute pleasure having you here and we look forward to seeing you again.

This was our first trip to SE Asia and based on other travellers experiences in the area I must say that we came with high expectations. Well, Batu Karang met or exceeded those expectations on every level. The location (Nusa Lembongan) was exactly what we were looking for...away from the bustle of the more mainstream tourist areas, gorgeous views, pristine turquoise ocean, great diving and snorkeling...I could go on.
Our experience started off with the pickup arranged by the resort from the Bali Denspar airport. Since we had some time to kill before the departure of the scoot boat our driver (Ketut, who I would highly recommend - very accommodating, friendly, with a spacious, clean, new air-conditioned car that fit 4 adults and 2 kids comfortably) took us for a mini tour of the area. Infact we liked him so much that we used him on our way back to pick us up and take us around the island for the entire day before dropping us off at the airport for our trip home for about $45 US. We wanted to buy some local art and he took us to a few great galleries/shops where we found what we were looking for. If you are looking for a car and driver on the main island, ask the resort for Ketut Narka!!!
The resort itself was terrific...well designed, fantastic views, incredible attention to detail, friendly staff who bent over backwards to provide awesome service. We had our 2 girls with us (ages 6 and 2) and the staff made sure that they were well taken care off.
All the activities that we wanted to do were seamlessly arranged by the resort at reasonables rates. As a response to a couple of other reviews - the resort merely acts as a facilitator - it is up to the guest to negotiate with the provider of the service and agree to the cost. We did a snorkelling trip with Capt Nemo - he was great - took great care of the beginner snorkellers in our group and even made sure that our 2 year old spent time in the water while we were snorkelling.
Rooms were terrific, and let me assure you that 1) the air conditioners work fine, 2) the view are spectacular, 3) we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for a golf cart to take us to the restaurant etc. (to clarify, since the resort is built on a hill, the paths are quite steep, so it's much easier to ride the cart), 4) towels were clean and plentiful and beds (including a sofa bed for our 6 yr old) were made with good linens on time, 5) breakfast was included, quantity was good, was well made and included coffee and juice.

The spa was great as well, and the services were very good, at a reasonable cost for the quality and ambience. The wedding pavilion at the highest point of the property is a nice bonus - nice place to hang out with family in the evening and have a pre dinner drink, while the kids play on the lawn.

Also, the quirks that I have come to associate with owner operated boutique hotels (manifested as a lack of professionalism in service, though they try hard, and little things going wrong with no staff on hand to immediately address the issue) were non existent here.

I thought that the tariffs and prices were reasonable for the location, level of service and overall quality. I am sure that there are cheaper places around, but when I searched online there was nothing comparable in terms of quality, reviews and location for a similar cost. As a point of reference the 4 Seasons in Bali was over $600, and though I am not suggesting that this is a 4 Seasons, for the money it is good value. Obviously it is not a behemoth like the chain resorts with acres and acres of land, but with only 40% built up and the clever design, the overall layout seems open and spacious.

Troy, the owner manager is very hands on, takes great care of his staff and is very friendly and knowledgeable about the area - a great resource for suggestions of things to do, and organizing activities. Also, very responsive to any questions that we had via e-mail prior to our trip (allowing for the 14 hour time difference!).

Overall a great experience, highly recommended.

As always, the variable nature of reviews such as these on websites like TripAdvisor do seem to be a very mixed bag. Whilst not denigrating the experiences of others, I an delighted to record our two penn'orth for the potential benefit of other travelers.

Did we enjoy Batu Karang? - yes, immensely.

Many previous reviewers have made special mention of the staff. We would agree wholeheartedly. What makes the difference is that this positive attitude came from staff at all levels, not just management or senior staff, but right across the range, including the Chef, waiters, bar staff and the whole team. Maybe it's a reciprocal thing, we travel with our minds open and with optimism to the fore: Batu Karang people seem to resonate well with this and made our stay an absolute pleasure.

"Going the extra mile" in the following specific ways:

1) Competent and speedy arrangement of bespoke transfers to/from the resort and Denpasar airport (we arrived too late to make the last Scoot boat transfer at 4pm, yet we were met at the airport arrivals area, delivered to a charter boat, and then whisked up to Batu Karang from Mushroom beach by buggy. Our expectations were well exceeded by the confident organisation of this complex itinerary, and last minute changes, by email.

2) Despite some comments to the contrary, we found the food a real pleasure. Our package included breakfast so we never encountered the experience of "extras" or "charging for coffee" that has been referred to in others experiences. We spent a week at Batu Karang, and whilst the menu is perhaps not the most extensive we have ever encountered, what was very welcome was the chat with the chef each evening to see what was fresh that day, what his recommendations were, or how we would prefer a particular dish to be prepared. An absolute must is the Jacket-fish option on the menu - freshly caught each day. I also appreciate being guided as to what's available "on island" and what's imported from Bali or beyond.

3) The accommodation (one of the suites further up the hill) was exactly to our taste. A small private plunge pool and outdoor bathroom were both firsts for us. The a/c was adequate, the place absolutely impeccable in terms of finish, cleanliness and maintenance.

4) Personal touches that made a difference for us included: desk staff organising onward travel: one of the staff acting as a guide to Nusa Penida (including organising the boat trips, private beach, case of cold drinks, packed lunch etc: always a buggy waiting to take us back up the hill after dinner each evening: excellent spa treatments: buggy trip to Dream Beach

I do agree with the comment of a previous reviewer that the lower pool is rather surrounded by the restaurant and bar. For us, it gave us the opportunity to dine or watch the sunset in a delightful setting. The two pools further up the hill are the ones we preferred to use during the day.

We found the island relatively undeveloped. It suited us as we were simply there to relax. The roads are pretty basic and though I did succeed in taking a scooter around the island the roads in the southern part especially were pretty basic.

A couple of things to bear in mind: the majority of the islands income (70%+) is derived from seaweed farming, so there is a lot of it about. It was interesting to watch the process. The beach opposite the hotel isn't that great (one for strolling along, rather than sunbathing on) We walked to Mushroom Beach a couple of times (takes about 30 mins) which is better but more day visitors from Sanur head there and it gets quite busy. Dream Beach was a good option - the hotel buggy dropped us there in the morning and came back for us later in the afternoon: it could be walked in about an hour round the coast or perhaps 45 mins across the island.

We were both delighted that we chose Batu Karang: slightly out of season the place was quiet, the weather was great, the establishment a delight and we would return in a heartbeat (!)

After a bumpy Scoot ride, we were glad to reach the island, and were not disappointed by a long beautiful beach of white sand, and clear blue waters, which looked perfect for spending our next three days chilling out. However the boat kept going, and finally stopped a couple of bays further up the island…

Wondering if this was the stop off and collection point to shuttle tourists back to the other beach with happy bronzed travellers and some exciting bars and restaurants to explore, we slowly began to realise that this was it. Although the beach here was still desirable as tropical beaches go, it really is more of a boat parking beach, with seaweed farms spread across the shore and local fishermen coming and going. Not the sort of place you would feel comfortable lying out in your bikini while getting stared at by the local fishermen.

We had our luggage picked up by a smiley Batu Karang staff member hanging out of a golf buggy and was escorted up the steps to the resort. It looked quite empty, but expected everyone was busy enjoying their afternoon at the other beach or maybe catching waves, or whatever it is that surfers do all day.

The resort is small, narrow and very steep, but there is occasional help from a golf buggy on request. On one side is another small resort with more basic accommodation, on the other side is scrubland, probably waiting to be developed on.

The rooms and buildings are beautifully designed, and looked like a lot of effort and money went into them, and being very new, still look very shiny and clean.

Once you have perspired a day’s intake of water on your journey to your room and you are through the heavily carved wooden Balinese doors, you are welcomed by the cooling air con, a large comfy bed, crisp white sheets covered with a canopy of mossie nets, attractive furnishings and an egg shaped bath to die for in the outdoor bathroom. The large balcony/terrace area is unfortunately completely shaded from the sun, so the only time we got to enjoy it was late afternoon / evening, when the mossies came out. We hoped to have breakfast there, but unfortunately room service is not available. Back to the bathroom though, as being open air, you have to wonder if you really can be seen by neighbours around you, as they are very exposed! I also wonder if they thought about what would happen if a hotel opened up next door with equally amazing views of the sea, volcano and you in the bath (luckily the toilet is enclosed) .

We enjoyed the long lap pool, and the middle pool with swim up bar. However the front pool is incorporated with the restaurant and does not feel like a relaxing place to chill while you are surrounded by diners enjoying their lunch. The wedding pavilion is also a nice place to admire the scenery and watch the sun disappear around the hill to the other beach, while enjoying a cool drink on a comfy sofa.

We were however quite disappointed by the restaurant, although the staff were lovely and welcoming (with exception to a late dinning request at 9pm, when they were clearly not happy to be serving us) the food standard was quite poor, and despite being in a country with exciting culinary delights, we never looked forward to or enjoyed very much of the food at the Batu Karang or on Lembongan island. Although our meals were presented nicely, none of the food seemed to have much flavour and even breakfast became a bit of a chore. The other local food choices are also quite limited, but slightly tastier and cheaper.

Although this is a picturesque place, it was starting to feel a bit eerie with the lack of people about, it is nice to have a huge swimming pool to yourself, but can be a bit strange being the only guests dinning in the restaurant sometimes. We did find one lively bar down the beach, full of surfer dudes and backpackers, and started to feel even more isolated as we are not particularly devoted to the surfing cult and hung up our back packs a few years ago and decided to upgrade ourselves by a few stars.

We did make the trek one evening (after a long walk across some overgrown paths) to the previously admired beach (mushroom bay) to see what we were missing, and although we got to enjoy our much missed sunset, and indulged in a long sandy beach without getting chased by malnourished salty dogs and found ourselves in the company of non-surfers, we were still not inspired by the food, and felt the accommodation was not plush as what we got to enjoy at the Batu Karang. I guess the beach food isn’t always better on the other side, but at least we had a bit more variety…

In a nut shell, if you don’t mind the surfers, the backpackers, a long trek to a better beach, steep hills, uninspiring food, no night life past 9pm, few people, no shops, few bars and restaurants, but love to stay somewhere a bit classy with bathrooms that came straight from a design magazine and enjoy a bit of snorkelling. You will probably really enjoy it here, and you always have the stunning scenery to drink in, even if you can’t afford the expensive cocktails.

Went here after reading a few reviews with some hesitation and wish I had not gone. This is not a 5 star hotel and after staying at The Conrad and The Komaneka on Bali, I was very disappointed. If the price was $100 to $150/night it would be tolerable but they charge as if they are in the ranks of the other hotels, and they are not. We had to call for fresh towels on the second day. OK I'm all for eco friendly but don't rehang towels that have been on the floor and call them clean. I asked for a 2nd cup of coffee in the morning and was charged! The views are alright if you like a peak-a-boo view looking into the roof of the villa below. There were some other irritations and when I took the time to write a 2 page comment for the manager he didn't seem to care, did nothing to make things right and refused to give me back 50 rupiahs that he said I had overpaid to his scooter rental guy. I would stay somewhere more reasonable on the island and save your money for the lovely hotels on Bali.

Management has received the 1 page letter outlining the things that are mentioned in the review and feels that some of the items were more a misunderstanding than anything else.
We back our Operations Manager 100% and can say that he is by no means rude and would have tried to help in whatever way possible. Guests can be very rude as well and guests can be very difficult to deal with sometimes.

Firstly it should be made clear that we are a remote location (an island) with no commercial laundry and as well as being eco friendly, logistically to change your towels 2 times a day is not as feasible as one would think the fact that you were given the extra towels on request surely demonstrates the resorts willingness to please as we provided them anyway..

We change our towels once a day as a standard practice.

The views are far more expansive than described in the review to say that they are peek a boo is quite contradictory to the other 22 reviews found here.

We do not rent Scooters, these are outsourced and we can not be held responsible for services obtained by guests outside of the resort. This is why the Operations Manager may not have refunded the 50 rp (USD$5) that you may have been overcharged by the renter as this would have been paid to the renter and not received by us. I would suggest speaking to the person whom the bike was rented from.

We just stayed there for three days on our honeymoon, and we felt like the hotel became our home. Many of the criticisms about this hotel seem to expect that 5 stars on this website means 5 Stars as in a Ritz Carlton in Tokyo. The island is barely in its infancy as a tourist location, so finding a hotel with Batu Karang's comfortable accommodations is a rarity. The rooms are huge, the AC was plenty cold (my wife would complain, too cold) and the views of the seaweed fields are fantastic. I'd suggest upgrading to the unobstructed views of the suites further up the hill. The breakfast isn't a highlight, but the dinner is as good as you'll get anywhere on the island. The spa is comfortable and hardly over-priced, unless you're getting massages on the beach somewhere else. The service is extraordinary---they are incredibly friendly and the GM/Owner, Troy, makes himself available for even the smallest of requests. He arranged our transfer off the island and a driver to take us to our next location once we got back to Bali.

Don't listen to the naysayers---and even they admitted their concerns were minor. Batu Karang is the best place to stay on the island. This place is great!!!!

having stay at batu karang recently (sept) i found the resort to be one of the best i have stayed at over a modestly lengthy stint running around europe and asia for some 8-10yrs.
i stayed with some good mates who have had similar times abroad and we spent a week with lovely, genuine locals working in the hotel within walking distance of their family homes which is sadly a little unique these days and a management team who addressed any concerns in a speedy fashion whilst we motor-biked around the island or floated around on pre-arranged snorkeling trips.
the views were stunning from all three of our bedrooms (some of the best breaks in bali i learnt from the locals, along with views of seaweed farms and the distant volcano) and we were somewhat spoilt by the choice of 3 pools.
yes - the occasional meal over 6 nights came with a slight variation on the changes WE made to the menu but i've had this happen by far less friendly staff in far more pompous 5* settings.
yes - occasionally we had to wait for 2-3mins whilst staff came back from dropping off other guests / luggage at the top of the resort for a buggy ride up to the top ourselves....perhaps we should have walked after stuffing ourselves anyway so am a little confused by another comment i read briefly on this point.
all in all a great time was had and it is on the list for 2009.
enjoy !
