We were skeptical of the place due to the extremely long journey back and forth, but took the plunge anyway after some googling on the images of the places. Glad we did!
We booked a private transport for 650,000 rupiah as there's often not enough demand for tour agency to organize a group. The 4 hours journey (single trip, 8 hours in total including return to Jogja) was quite harsh and our driver was driving extremely fast. We felt it was quite dangerous as the road was narrow and there were a lot of turns. Luckily no accident happened. This is something to take note.
Upon reaching the highland there's basically three places to visit, a small and old temple which was not very impressive, but nevertheless a first stop to experience the cold and fresh air. Remember to bring along a jacket as the temperature can get very low up there. Then there's the Sikidang Kawah, a volcanic crater with boiling water and steam with extremely strong smell of sulphur. A mask can be bought from the merchants in the area. This was the highlight of Dieng, we climbed the small hill besides the large pool of boiling mud and the view from above the hill was absolutely breathtaking! The continuous steam and the surrounding terraces and mountains make some very special scene for photobugs!
The last place we visited was Telaga Berwarna, or "Lake with color". The lake was green and it wasn't as impressive as we had hoped it would be after visiting Sikidang Kawah, but it was still good scenery and again photobugs should love the place too.
The whole trip started 7.30am in the morning and we got back to Yogyakarta around 8pm. Long journey well worth it!
