“A pleasant way to spend half a day in Brussels.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2013

In May we visited the Alberto Magnelli exhibition at the small Musee D'Ixelles in Brussels. This was a very pleasant experience and a lot quieter and more intimate than the crowded city centre museums - and more reasonably priced. The Gallery is situated in a quiet residential street but is easy to get to by bus. The exhibition was excellent - a large number of works in a well lit space and easy to appreciate. The rest of the collection is varied - there is a good collection of Lautrec posters, and a hit and miss historic sequence of Belgian artworks spanning the centuries - also some interesting modern items; all told - a pleasant way to spend half a day in Brussels.

“A trip down memory lane”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

Intimate, old-fashioned, imbued with nostalgia, this museum hasn't had any renovations in several decennia. It houses a small albeit reasonably interesting permanent collection of surrealist (Magritte, Delvaux, Bogart), expressionist (Permeke, Gustave De Smet, Gustave Van de Woestijne), impressionist and neo-impressionist (Théo Van Rysselberghe, Émile Claus), and symbolist (William Degouve de Nuncques) paintings. Also on display is a collection of Toulouse Lautrec posters. Annually, the museum organizes several temporary retrospectives of major 19th-20th century artists, alongside several presentations of up-and-coming local contemporary artists. Twice yearly, somewhere between September and December, the museum participates in the annual late night openings of the Brussels musea; on at least one of these occasions, artist performances add lustre to the event. The Ixelles museum is a must for everyone who wants to spend an afternoon soaking up culture in an easy-going atmosphere.

“An impressive tour in Arts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

The Musse des Beaux Arts d'Ixelles provides an impressive permanent collection, from the 16th/17th century until modern art. Sometimes, when you feel not having the information, just enjoying the pieces, you can do, just feeling. I discovered also through the museum, by their temporary exhibition, the work of Alberto Magnelli. It's a hidden Museum you think small first. But it's not all ! Take the time to discover it.

“Nice little city museum but little else”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2012

OK for a short visit if you're in the neighbourhood, but not worth a detour except for some of the temporary exhibitions
