“Perfect lunch in a temple of serenity”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

Lovely place on Rue Prince Royale with a very friendly owner. I always eat his famous daily menu, chicken bolls a la ginger and vegetables. Delicious!

I love coming here because of the atmoshpere, the old shelves made of wooden boxes, the kid drawings on the wall, the tables which have no two identical chairs surrounding them. Time stops while you are there, everything rebalances itself and you have a moment of calm with good food.

You can also sit outside on the street when the weather allows. He makes sandwiches to take away. Sometimes if it gets busy during lunch hour, dont expect to have a "quick lunch"- you have EXKI for that. The owner works on his own, so be patient, but thats the whole point of going there anyway.

“Just got to love this place (and the owner)”
Reviewed July 10, 2011

L'épicerie (meaning grocery) is in fact an old grocery, still bearing the old scale, old shelves, ceramics and all the charm of a neighborhood provider. It is very hard to define this place. Is it a restaurant? A snack joint? A grocery store? All of the above? Probably all of these but also much more.
Basically, this litte jewel lost in the most uncanny backroad of Brussels, is only open for lunch or late lunches if you're lucky. It opens around mid day and closes only when the last visitor has left, mondays to saturdays. It is run by a wonderful person, Mongkthon from Thailand, that does EVERYTHING himself. The cooking, the sandwiches, the cleaning, the dressing etc... And it's all yummy. The sandwiches are all freshly made in front of you, the products are absolutely fresh and always a touch of creativity. You also always have 2 thai main dishes (the best I have had in Europe) and a season soup. Tarts are belge/french style, made by Françoise, another institution of the 'Ixellian' food stores. And you're always in for a little surprise (artisanal chocolates, a forgotten wine or some other curiosity the owner will joyfully propose). You can also buy some groceries, cheeses, or delicious cured meats. And to top it all, Mongkthon is a big fan of music, so prepare your ears, you will listen to some good stuff, or learn about a great music festival in town.
So you can take-away the snacks or eat in this little bit of wonder, either ways, be quick, the curries and ingredients are so fresh that he very often runs out of main dishes if you come in too late.
Enjoy the discovery!
