I needed reminding of the importance of the Castle as being where the Howard family were based for generations and provided two of Henry VIII's seven wives. Henry's daughter Mary Tudor, or Catholic Mary 1st of England, Ireland and Spain, assembled a force here to march to London to claim the throne. Enough history!
The Castle has a great atmosphere and is one of few with buildings remaining on the inside of the main walls. Excellent description of the history plus an odd little local Museum.

Framlingham Castle is an interesting castle as it consists of a castle wall as its perimeter with a building inside it which holds the shop and a museum. Inside the grounds is a large expanse of grass which is great for kids and families who want a picnic etc.

The museum has a virtual tour which guides you around the castle walls (you can walk all the way around the walls) if you are unable to climb the steps to the top. Free audio equipment is given to give an audio commentary which is easy to use. Staff were friendly.

If you have kids and its sunny, great attraction to go to. You can also park all day (get a ticket from the admissions office) and use it as a base to explore the town of Framlingham!

There are super views from the top walkway around the castle. Decent size grass inside the walls make a nice sheltered picnic area. Some interesting displays but quite limited. We were finished our visit within an hour, so OK for EH members who don't have to pay the entry fee. Free audio guides from the gift shop.

Brilliant. A wonderfully evocative setting with plenty to see for both adults and children. Plenty of walking for those who have dogs. They must be on a lead in the castle precinct. Good for a picnic.
