The area around Lac de Sainte Croix is perfect for nature lovers and offers several very interesting places for sightseing. Our favs are Moustiers with its chruch, the Gorges du Verdon and the endless lavender fields. There are also plenty of water activities available. However, during off-season many places are closed and you should plan restaurant and shop visits carefully. Enjoy!

Wished we could have spent a little more time there. Although it was September, it was very hot and crowded. Boats for hire, canoes and pedalos, making for a very pleasant day. The scenery is magnificent and well worth a boat ride to get a better view of the gorge and the amazing turquoise water. Parking is reasonably easy so if you want a relaxing day by the water, this is as good as it gets.

Since we went in September it was actually very tranquil and we could enjoy the scenery and take pictures without people, boats or pedalo's on it. We really wanted to hire a pedalo with a slide on it, but this was not offered at the entrance to the Gorges (it was in Saint-Croix). This might be due to mid season. We travelled the whole lake and recommend the entrance to the Gorges (probably quite busy in high season and the little beaches in between the towns to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the lake). We didn't woke up early enough to see the Mistral (the mist in the morning rising of the lake), but we saw parts of it and do think it would be worth your while to wake up early and travel to higher ground to see the Mistral over the lake.

The lake and gorge du verdon with its turquoise water, and the story behind it it well worth seeing, firstly from the high road viewing points, then from a canoe or pedaloe you can hire.
We (family of 4 with two young boys ) did it in half a day from st aygulf / frejus. Also a really nice mountain drive to get there.
Worth doing the drive around the lake, and call in to the "new" st croix village, there is a lovely small taverna overlooking the lake, where you can catch a beer, and plancha.
I have only marked as a 4, as the canoe etc hire a bit disorganised, and also a bit busy up the gorge, push yourself to try get past the crowds, worth finding some serene time on your own.
It's a fabulous spectacle, and if you can you should go, enjoy !

We discovered the lake after driving around the stunning Gorges du Verdon. It is a lovely turquoise blue in colour but we found it tricky to get down to it at lake level. We eventually accessed it via Les Salles sur Verdon. Small pebbly beach, surrounded by trees, free car park, small snack bar and seating area. Perfect! Lots of locals go there. The lake is absolutely breathtaking, both to look and to swim in. Floating in this soothing water, looking up at the blue sky is like being in paradise. I didn't want to get out! Ideal for anyone, including those with children. On a calm day there are no waves as such, however, there are no 'life guards' there so take caution.
