“Rick Steves is right... this is heaven”

Gimmelwald - Tanzbodeli
Reviewed March 18, 2013

As long as the sun is shining, and the clouds are whisked away from the alpine peaks, its truly heaven. And if its cloud and wet, don't fear, there are still things to do and the sun will be up, soon.

Stay at the hostel if you want a few dozen instant friends. Or reserve a room in advance at Ollie the schoolteacher friend of Rick's. Walter's hotel up the hill is old and creaky and has perfect views.

Take the lift down to the valley for a stroll, or ride up to the top revolving restaurant for breakfast.

We stayed in a clean, inexpensive youth hostel with our 2 teen kids in Lautenbrunner. A short drive out of town at the Schilthornbahn cable car station we rode the cable car up the mountain to Murren, a lovely ski resort town with spectacular views of the snow capped mountains and valley below. There were several wooden structures dating back to the 1650's on the main street. Flowers spilled out over wooden wheelbarrows and window boxes. The paved path meandering down to Gimmelwald is an easy 40 minute walk with easily managable switchbacks that takes you through fields of wildflowers, sheep and cows with cow bells hanging from their necks. It's a magical Heidi-land with breathtaking views at every turn. Gimmelwald is a small village with a dozen buildings. There is one shop called "The Honesty Shop" which has a few antiques, local crafts and snacks, but no shopkeeper. You leave a list of your purchases on a note pad and put the money in an envelope. The Pension Gimmelwald serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We sat outside with a million dollar view and ate the best omlette I've ever tasted. The waiter pointed to the hen wandering at our feet who contributed the eggs. This was one of our favorite days in a month-long European trip.

If you are ready for an awesome (but killer) hike, Gimmelwald->Tanzbodeli is for you! It is so steep, you won't believe it... You'll walk through fields of cows, scramble up grassy knolls and maybe even climb through a bit of snow. But once you get to the top, you'll be blown away by the view. As a note, I do not recommending returning to Gimmelwald the way you came. Instead, once you leave the top of Tanzbodeli, head down to the Hotel Obersteinberg for lunch & a beer. Then, continue down the valley to Stechelberg and take the tram back up to Gimmelwald. ENJOY!

I loved the view and how peaceful it was. There was nothing to dislike, unless you are looking for nightlife.

Read it online somewhere - "If heaven isn't what it's cracked up to be, send me back to Gimmelwald". I thought that was funny at first but not till I was there at Gimmelwald. And I want to go back since the minute I left.

We arrived on a beautiful day in early June and immidiately we were surrounded by this paradise. The sky was bright blue and we could clearly see the top of the mountains even it was already 3 pm in the afternoon. Since we only scheduled 2 days/2 nights stay at Gimmelwald, we dropped our bags at the hotel and hiked toward Murren so we not wasting any time of our visit here. Imagin this - happy cows scattered in the immense green valley down below and fainted cow bell from afar, colorful flowers everywhere on the hills, by the rode side, in front of traditional Switzerland houses. The smell of clean air, green grass and small trace of manure. When look up, there were the mountains with snow top, one can easily spot glacier on the mountains. And the back drop of blue sky, What can I ask for more.

The night was not dark till after 11 pm, even then you can still see the mountains under the pink moon light. Next day, we hiked down to Stechelberg from Gimmelwald. The view on the way down was superb and very relaxes, although the some part of the trail could be steep for people who has lowerback problem.

Overall, Switzerland Alpine is a beautiful place to visit for at least a week. We were very luky to have nice weather for our 2 days visit. The hotel manager told us some people came for couple days and could only see the house down the next hill due to the weather. I think it still worth to come up here and enjoy the atmosphere. But why Gimmelwald? Cause it is a nice small town with only handful of B&B if you want to stay somewhere peaceful and quiet. And it is convinient location if you want to explore differnt part of the Alps.
