If you are looking for the charm of the Alps, good conversation and a slower pace this is the place. It is not the Ritz. Walter and Tim make you feel like a welcome guest in their home. Meals are family style where you swap stories of the days experiences and tomorrow's plans late into the night. The location is a wonderful gateway to all the activities the Alps offers. You can get a home cooked meal here or dine with younger drinking crowd down below (food in both locations is good), but definitely take your first meal with Walter as you may decide you have no need to eat elsewhere. Besides cook, manager, and maid, Tim is a great concierge with knowledge in all the trails, activities and weather. Hope to come back one day.

We loved our stay here. Yes, we found it via Rick Steves and so all the other guests had done the same, but this one is a keeper.
Gimmelwald is a tiny hamlet amidst the Bernese Alps, with an incredible sweep of view across the valley to a mountain wall covered with cataracts. The gondola ride up from the valley floor is a joy in itself and then you are walking up Gimmelwald's one narrow road to the hotel. They serve dinner family style, alternating between two menus, and the sharing of stories with the other diners is part of the joy of the stay. Continuing the 'you are a guest in my home' motif, there are no room keys and the bath is down the hall. This hotel is for hikers and nature lovers, but would be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues, the stairs are steep (like the trails in the surrounding area). The sunsets that we watched from our over the front door balcony were truly epic. We'll be back.

Gimmelwald has a population of about 50. There's not much here... If you are looking for the party scene or to go clubbing at the discotheke, gimmelwald is not your place. If you want a breathtaking veiw, a peace that only comes (at least for me) in the alps, and some neat people, this is your place. Be on time for dinner or you won't have any... But understand up front that those are the rules and everything is great- this hotel is classic swiss. Beautiful wood, awesome place.

Yes, almost everyone there knew it from Rick Steves and most were fellow Americans, but we had a fantastic time talking with our fellow travelers each night over dinner. I would love to be back there. The Mittaghorn is a wonderfully simple place to spend the evenings after days spent in awe of the Jungfrau region.

We actually traveled in October of 2011 but can no longer select that option. One night was not even close to enough. Not sure it would be my teenager's favorite thing to do, but it was one of the most romantic, cozy little places I have ever been and it topped my list of things we did for a month in Switzerland. Pretty much everything I would say is just going to mimic what has already been said, but they aren't exaggerating. Tim was a fantastic host, sharing videos of climbing and even one he took of a couples he had guided on a climb that day.
We went after reading about it from Rick Steves and he was most accurate in that you will find no other place quite so "Heidi-like" in the alps as you find here. Wifi is a terrific bonus as you can chill out and relax while uploading pictures etc to the net with a view unlike any other we saw.

The interaction with others who had read the same thing was really neat too. It allowed time over meals we shared to offer advice on things we had already done and get advice from others on the things we had not. I would love to go back and spend a couple weeks here.

Room Tip: There are NO bad rooms!

There are not enough wonderful things to say about our charming stay at Hotel Mittaghorn. Tim was an incredible host- giving us helpful information about hikes, activities and the region. We loved the cozy feel that the hotel provided and especially enjoyed the community with the other guests. We shared stories and laughter over breakfast and dinner which led to new friendships and lifelong memories. The stunning view out of our room was absolutely breathtaking, the shower provided lots of laughs and the overall experience was surreal. We hope to return time and time again and highly recommend this unique hotel to anyone!

This place is unlike any other!!! Our time in Gimmelwald was lovely and one of the favorite stops on our trip. Very rustic hotel with years of love and character. Walter and Tim were great hosts and we loved the homemade dinner from Walter we enjoyed each evening. The view from our balcony took our breath away and we would love to go back and spend more than 2 nights. Highly recommend for those who want to feel the charm and escape of time in a small alpine town:)

Room Tip: Pay the 10 francs extra for a balcony!!!!
