Perfect. A sleeper of a small town location in tourist-heavy Switzerland. Fantastic weekly package of half-board, 7 nights balcony view room, plus Berner Oberland travel pass - for approx US$900 each. (2004)
Absolutely beautiful grounds, quiet, Swiss chalet ambiance with window boxes dripping geraniums, stunning lake views with village steeples, glorious sunsets, short garden walk up hill from train station. Very romantic. Very helpful staff. Hotel van is also available
Gourmet dining - 4 course meals with 2- 3 choices for each course. Vegetarian offerings as well. Dinners on large lakeview terrace, open doors in good weather, glass-walled otherwise.
Sumptuous breakfasts in sunny full-windowed lodge room overlooking the lake. Uniquely and oddly decorated rooms - loved the "Cheese Hut" room. Shower, not bath in this room.
Visit their website to view other room choices - some really oddly decorated ones and that is the fun of this place. But very low-key and very Swiss - just a bit of whimsy from this wood-carver's town.
Fabulous hiking a short boat or train trip away - be sure to do the Faulhoun, Rothorn and the Jusital area hikes. And visit Giessbach across the lake by short boat ride and the trail to Isetwald. Enjoy the best about Switzerland, with the Swiss and not the tourists.
But shhhhh...don't tell anyone else about this place. It will truly become your home away from home. I can hardly wait to go back
