Owner description: Enjoy your trip with the 125 year old steam train trough the beautiful scenery of these wonderful Swiss mountains. After passing the forrest, the graze with cows, you slowly climb up to the Rothorn. On top you have an extraordinary view over more than 100 mountains! Don't forget to visit our restaurant on top which offers you a wide range of typical swiss foods and drinks. Just relax and enjoy your day up on the Rothorn!

What a fantastic day we had on the beautiful Rothorn! I'd been up several times before, but it was my fiance's first time. We picked the perfect day for it, clear, blue sky. Beautiful! Although it was busy, the train up was very plessant. At the top we had a very nice lunch, with a breath taking view. We were initially going to walk to Planalp and get the train back from there, but after a beer and a pudding at the lovely restaurant there, we felt rested and inspired enough to walk the rest of the way! Highly recommended, its a stunning walk!! Also recommended is the meringue with cream - delicious!!

Travelling up the steep mountain slope in those little red trains is an amazing experience. It takes one hour to get to the top, from where you have the most incredible vistas. There's a restaurant with a big terrace to contemplate the view, and to have a bite to eat. On the way back, you can get off at Planalp (about half-way down), and walk the rest into Brienz. It's an easy hike of about 2 hours.

Having last visited the Rothorn Bahn in 1971, we were looking forward to letting the family experience the pleasure of being pushed up the mountain by one of the railway's wonderful steam engines. Instead, the only steam engine there was the one used on the 'Sausage Train'. All the other trains, including the ones in which we ascended and descended, were propelled by diesels.

The whole point of this railway, which has little to see at the top, is the steam engines. We felt cheated.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that you did not have the chance to ride with a steam engine that day. We have checked the engine arrangement of August 14, 2013 and yes we did have diesel engines on track that day as it was beautiful sunny weather. In total there were four steam engines and two diesel engines on track. If it's such beautiful weather we do put diesel backup trains on track that we can transport all the guests. At the end everybody has the chance to ride with the steam train. It just depends if the people would like to wait for the next steam train or prefer going on time but then with the diesel locomotive.

Hope to welcome you again with us for a ride with the steam train.

Kind regards

amazing views and experience going up the mountain train. The kids loved it as did we but its rather expensive. Would love to do it again but walk down but we didn't have the right footwear. A Must do experience.

This is a must for steam train enthusiasts. For those visitors who have travelled on steam trains around the world the people operating these trains are no different to those running other railways, they love the trains and everything about the operation. They have a lot of knowledge and if they cannot answer a question they know someone who can. If you are interested and ask questions they come out with additional information, it was great.

Having raved about the individuals, the journey was just as good, stunning views all the way up the mountain accompanied by the ‘chug chug’ of the powerful little locomotive. We travelled on a very bright day with the sides of the train open, it did get cloudy at the summit but it was still possible to see for long distances. We did not stay at the top as we wanted to get a quick turnaround but there was a restaurant and facilities.
