“A museum with a difference.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2013

Massive museum, with masses to see. Beautiful old buildings, nicely presented, with all the old crafts to see. So much to see, very tiring. I spent the best part of two days there and it was hot.
Something for everyone to see, including the animals which will delight children and adults alike!

“100 years ago in front of your eyes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2013

very nice not only by buildings and tools, but also people working the same as 100 years ago let you see how was the life 100 years ago. It can be very useful for young adults and teenagers to touch how the life style has changed during this 100 years. So much to learn!

“A showcase for traditional architecture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2013

A very interesting open air museum with about 100 agricultural buildings representing from different Cantons. It’s an insight into bucolic architecture in Switzerland and includes, in most places, English commentary. We had a pleasant day wandering the extensive site.
The museum is not dissimilar to St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life in Cardiff. I’m not sure which is the oldest but there are some interesting comparisons to make. The first is that Ballenberg is expensive at 22CHF per head. The equivalent in Cardiff is £2.50 parking charge and free entry! Only one winner there I think.
Also, the Swiss are victims of their own success. Although the styles of architecture span a few centuries, the Swiss have been successful at maintaining their traditional architecture in Alpine regions and so the very old farmhouses were not dissimilar in appearance from the chalet we were renting in Isenfluh. In St Fagans the 500 year old farmhouses are totally alien to modern visitors.
Surprisingly, though, many of the older buildings in Ballenberg and in Cardiff , 1300 km have similar features. One thing that struck me was that the Swiss buildings had bigger windows and were far lighter. They were much more pleasant living spaces that their Welsh equivalent. Nothing has changed in centuries!
Ballenberg too sticks closely to the remit of representing agricultural architecture and includes livestock and crops that helps you get a feel for the relationship between the people and the land. We particularly liked the example of a traditional building that had been sympathetically modernised. We also liked the picnic area where you were free to take wood and use the barbecue to cook your lunch. The locally produced foods in the shop looked wonderful.
This is a very informative, if expensive day out. It could be a good place to go if the weather isn’t perfect.
I have to say that St Fagans near Cardiff is every bit a match for it – and that’s free!

“Boring”

You don't have a tour guide and you are just set free, so trying to learn and observe myself with out any background on the place didn't fancy me to well.
