“Fantastic day...Swiss answer to Williamsburg”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

Have wanted to come here for years and finally went with hubby in late September. We stayed in Ringennberg outside of Interlaken and the trip was short and very scenic. Easy to follow directons. Cost of admission was very fair and well worth the hours spent. Loved the open air look in the mountains showing all different regions of Swizterland in their homes, barns, crafts...the craft people working on the farms, looms, cider mill....Not onlly interesting to see but also felt transported to each home. Did not need any translation since I speak and understand German but lots of the craftsmen spoke English too. Enjoyed stopping at one of the wonderful restaurants for delicious refreshments....everybody was enjoying themselves immensely. THey had a horse-drawn large cart for folks who needed help to get around. Yes, some of the homes were hard to get to with the steep hills in spots and the stairs in homes are difficult to navigate for anybody with physical disabilities....I have a problem with my leg and knee so we modified our walking...it was sooo beautiful to walk in the open air, so refreshing in the sun...birds, laughter were the main sounds coming from everywhere....families enjoyed the museum with lots of areas for children to play, look at farm animals. We knew that doing the entire museum was way to difficult so that we spent hours on one side and enjoyed as much as we could before leaving....and...do not forget to go to the best gift shop in Switzerland....The most authentic plentiful objects to buy as souvenirs...wonderful prices and great selection. Left with great feelings and stopped in Brienz, which was wonderful to walk around with loads of charming woodworking shops, restaurants, etc. This is a MUST SEE place for everybody who visits Swizterland...and the Swiss love it too!

“Great fun...”

Ballenburg is huge! We arrived about noon and barely got to see anything because it took an hour to get lunch. I suggest packing your own lunch, getting there early, charting a course, and enjoying the day. Choose a nice sunny day and ENJOY!

“Loved it!”
Reviewed October 12, 2012

Ballenberg is AMAZING! Firstly the location is beautiful.

The different areas of Switzerland are represented by traditional buildings from those areas. In many of these buildings there were demonstrations of crafts and trades that ranged from weaving and rope-making to using water-power to run machinery for grinding, extracting oil, sawing lumber, etc.

Then they were the farm animals – so many varieties of cows, goats, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, even swiss crested pigeons. We LOVED it!

There was a room filled with cow-bells. It surprised us how HEAVY the bells are!

One thing that “shocked” us – there was a “live” wire running around the pens holding the goats. I had leaned forward to take a photo and as I brushed against the wire, I got a mild electric shock! Totally unexpected! What if an excited little child touches the wire?

There was so much to see and do in Ballenberg. We saw a demonstration on playing the alpine horn though the person spoke in German so we didn’t understand anything. There was a scent cave on perfumes and fragrances. The room on bird calls was very popular with the kids.

We spent about 5 hours in Ballenberg and we were nowhere close to having seen it all! We left from the West entrance.

Admission is free with the Swiss Pass.
