It is so close to Interlaken that it is worth the visit. The villages around the lake are picturesque. There is a ferry on the lake.

I can say I have never seen any place as beautiful as this. So calling it beautiful will be an understatement. It was more beautiful than I had expected it to be.
We reached Interlaken OST by train, came out of the train station following the direction shown for 'Schiffart' to board the cruise ship.
Oh you have to take this cruise, the water is BEAUTIFUL. None of the pictures you see are photoshoped, they really aren't. The lake is really that beautiful.
A turquoise colored alpine lake surrounded by mountains with lush green trees and beautiful houses. This is the stuff that dreams are made of.

A couple of suggestions:
1. If you plan to cover Interlaken, Lake Brienz and Lake Thun all in one day then try to go for the day pass, it also covers the cruise and the train and bus travels. Or if you have any other pass just check if it includes the cruise as well. If you have any doubts about it, just check at the ticket counter.

2. Though you can travel both ways (between Interlaken OST and Lake Brienz) by water, I would still suggest that you take the journey back from Brienz to Interlaken by train, get down at random station take a walk along the lake, click stunning pictures if you would like to, hop on to the next train to Interlaken. This would be one of the good ways to enjoy this beautiful beautiful lake.

3. If you can take cruise on both Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, but if you have to choose between the two, I would vote for Lake Brienz any day.

Go on board an old Paddle-Steamer, go down and watch the very clean old engine turn. Sit on the deck with a drink, perhaps stop off at Interlaken or Brienz, or any other little port of call.
Great fun, as relaxing or as energetic as you want to make it.

There are some cafes just close to the shore. Relax . watch allover the lake and enjoy your coffee. At TEA HOUSE the hot chocolate was very good.

See this from the boat, especially the old steam driven paddle steamer. This service only runs late spring to mid September, but no extra cost. Free with Swiss Rail Pass. A must do.
