“Worth the climb for the views!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

The hotel was a short uphill walk from where the postbus dropped us, but worth it as it definitely had the best views in town. Our balcony doors opened up to a stunning view of Mts Eiger, Münch and Jungfrau right in front of us (ask for room 7). The room was good sized and comfortable, with a very large bathroom. Small gripe: for the price of the room, I expected more toiletries than a sachet of shower gel and a small soap. It was great to have free WIFI access in the room.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the lovely lady in the dining room. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice. We had dinner there one night but thought this a bit overpriced. The swimming pool was very welcoming on a hot day with plenty of space for relaxing alongside.

Wilderswil is a small town, a bit sleepy in the summer, I imagine it is a lot more lively in the winter, but it was an excellent base for us to do the Schynige Platte to First walk.

We visited this place with our family, July 2012. Friendly atmosphere and stunning views of the Jungfrau anf the Monch.
Nice little swimmingpool - the water was quite cold but nevertheless wonderfull on a warm summerday - set in the same great location, with meadows, woods, and mountains.
We slept in the Chalet; had two beautiful and big rooms. Very quiet at night; the only sound came from the cow bells which is a wonderfull sound.
Dinner was "Fondue Chinoise", delicious and very good.
We spent several weeks in Switzerland and visited many hotels - this one was not the most luxurious, but it was the most charming.

The PLUS: The friendly owner/staff. The good breakfast buffet (unfortunately did not have time for dinner but I remember the hotel's delicious meals from another visit in 2011).
Great to have free WIFI access throughout the entire hotel without access code being required.

The NEGATIVES: The rooms (had one double and one single room) are rather basic and extremely small. So is the bathroom. Also the mattress width is only 80 cm (90 cm being standard) and not of the highest comfort.
I also found the room rate far too high for the quality offered but this is probably due to the season.

Room Tip: Better to have rooms on the top floors as one hears the neighbors walking around above (woody floor...

This is a lovely, quiet, smallish hotel with dramatic views of the Alps on one side and the long valley of Interlaken on the other side. Classic Swiss simplicity and comfort in the no-frills, very clean rooms. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast included with your room is extensive and delicious. There is also a sweet hotel cat (outdoors) that will be your friend forever if you pet it once. There is a herd of sheep grazing in an adjacent field, each one wearing a clanking bell. We found the sound charming to wake up to in the morning, and they were generally quiet at night. This is a great location to base yourself for exploring the Bernese Oberland and Interlaken.

Yes, the trek up the hill (especially with heavy-ish backpacks) was a bit of a mission, but once there, Hotel Berghof is a lovely place. It has a fantastic view of the mountains and once we got up there, we didn't want to leave again - so we had dinner at the hotel's restaurant, which was perfect. It was a set 5 course menu and the food was of very good. You also have a lovely view of the mountains from the dining area.
Our double room was large! The double bed was big & very comfortable, there was also plenty of space for a 2 seater sofa, a desk with chair and a big cupboard. Our room also had a balcony (with chairs & a small table) looking out onto that gorgeous mountain view.
The ensuite was also very nice - clean with a spacious shower, toiletries, hair dryer and even face cloths were provided (you don't find that often these days).
We feasted on the buffet breakfast which was well stocked with hot & cold food, meats, cereals, hot and cold drinks, breads, cheese... plenty of choice for everybody's tastes.
Highly recommend this hotel, it was a very pleasant experience - will definitely stay there again.

We picked this hotel for our visit to Jungfrau. It was less expensive than staying in Lauterbrunnen. The hotel is in a lovely location on a rise at the end of a narrow village road in Wilderswil surrounded by hills and farmland with views to Interlaken. The site has a main hotel building and a smaller swiss chalet with about 10 rooms. We were in the chalet. Our room was spacious with lounge area and balcony. Very comfortable and clean. The beds very comfortable and good internet access. The breakfast each morning was very good. Staff were helpful. The hotel was a short drive to visit Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen. The village was very pretty with numerous restaurants if you did not want to eat at the hotel.

Thank goodness we stayed in Wilderswil. After a staggeringly breathtaking journey from Geneva and Montreux the hotel is situated in an attractive, traditional village just a few mins drive from the awful inanity of Interlaken (do swerve this built up, over-commercialised town with abundant souvenir shops. It's an abject disappointment and nothing positive can be said regrettably). Fortunately we had a car and travelled the extra miles to see Lucerne and Berne, attractive mid-sized cities on the lakes with lovely architecture and worth a visit. Switzerland is expensive e.g 7 euros for a standard cup of coffee, eek!!
Back to the hotel, it is situated at the far 'end' of Wilderswil, an unspoilt village that's mainly flat but the hotel is accessed via a short stretch of narrow, steep road. Drive safely and you'll find it's worth it as the view opens out across the valley beyond. For those who enjoy walking the incline can be easily tackled if you are able-bodied and take your time. Happily parking is free (definitely welcome after costly city hotel parking) and as there are a few steep steps at the front just unload and park at the side/rear where it's flat.
In all honesty after passing many beautiful wooden chalets en-route our hearts sank upon turning the corner to find a somewhat dated, concrete type of building with dated interior which did initially disappoint.
The reception appeared cluttered also accommodating a wi-fi/tv area, which was a tad homely almost reminiscent of the style of Eastern block accommodation that serves as living, sleeping and cooking quarters in one. Along with a whiff of cooked cabbage that day it was slightly offputting (although that would be unfair given our great dining experience). On a positive note the staff/owner were welcoming and attended to our needs albeit there was no assistance to the room. You are pointed in the direction of the lift within the inner lounge/bar space which is dark and frankly depressing.
A compact layout, the inner lounge/bar/lift feels cramped and dimly lit by whatever daylight is available consequently is lacking ambience. The bar is left unmanned and largely in darkness almost as though closed, a sad thing when ordinarily the hub of conviviality. Being a heavily used thoroughfare you feel in the way at the bar and so it feels difficult to relax there. That said, the lounge 'area' is literally crammed with large, comfy sofas - great for when you want to use the free and popular wi-fi.
Though its a small issue the lights in public areas had missing lamps here and there so adding to the dimness, again a sad thing to see (pardon the pun). Had the lamps just expired or was it a cost saving exercise?
The room was a standard if not small size (booked superior so expected something a tad larger). Nice wardrobes and a safe within - a feature not provided by many hotels. Immaculately clean with a modern ensuite, great shower and lashings of hot water, cosily warm rooms. Well insulated, no noise from other rooms/lift next door (apart from loud echos when people were using the stairs, to be expected). French doors revealed wonderful vistas across Wilderswil valley and the adjacent window looked onto the mountainside, a lovely outlook.
The views from the dining room are superb even if partly blocked by mature trees but that's nature for you. Refreshing to see staff and the maintenance chap busily keeping the place spotless, the tables/chairs on the large patio being hosed down. There is a small swimming pool with a view at the side and whilst the garden/flags where unkempt at this stage - the beginning of May - I expect they would be attended to. How wonderful to hear the bells tinkle around the cows' and goats' necks in the fields - exactly as you imagine Switzerland to be!
The dining room was large with tables set around the vast side windows (revealing dramatic scenery - so stunning whether sunny or circled in the morning mist). Breakfast is buffet style as were the starters at the eve meal, plenty of choice and wholesome. Remaining dinner courses are served at the table. Smart, crisp, clean table linen, extremely good standard of food and service. We were utterly delighted with the efficient, friendly staff particlularly Andrea who is worth a special mention and is a credit to the establishment - a special thank you. Nice wine selection, varied prices to suit the pocket. A culinary dining experience!
We didnt need to use public transport but found out they were easily accessible - the bus and a train station at the side of the village were well-located. There's not much else there but essential food shopping and it appeared to be a quiet residential village (lovely, polite school children who greeted complete strangers!).
No sign of 'nightlife'. I expect it revolves around the hotel bars.
All in all the hotel was a pleasant stopping off point. Pretty location. Would we go again? On balance, Interlaken isn't worth the journey or effort to return to. We wouldn't put anyone off staying at the hotel, it was sufficient and comfortable with good food, excellent service and friendly staff. It is a medium sized hotel personally run by the owner who is on site which is worth a lot. It met all our needs.

Room Tip: Corner suites have lovely views and a balcony. No noise, very peaceful. Good ensuite facility - su...
