“Authentic Swiss Food away from Mass Tourism”
Review of Gasthof Baeren

Having lived in the area in our younger years my wife and I enjoyed this restaurant for its authentic Swiss food, during a recent vacation. The traditional Swiss decor adds to the well prepared and served menu items. If you like cheese fondue or any meal including the typical "Roeschty", (think hash brown potatoes), this is the place to be. Of course there are many other choices and observing other guests, everyone looked happy and stayed for the evening, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere, away from the mass tourism in nearby Interlaken, which appears to be dominated by Asian and Arab mass tourism.

My husband and I recently had dinner at this hotel with another couple. The waiter was an older gentleman who was abrupt to say the least. My friend ordered schnitzel and so did my husband, the waiter confirmed our four orders including two schnitzel dinners. We were brought bread, no butter. Ate the bread as we were quite hungry, then over 15 minutes later the butter arrived. Items were placed on the table with a thud and we were regretting our decision to eat at the hotel by now as it was fairly high priced and so far not a very enjoyable experience. Meals arrived, brought by another server. One schnitzel and one completely different item which was a lot more expensive. My husband said he'd ordered schnitzel, the server went back to the kitchen. Our waiter then came out and rather rudely stated that my husband had ordered this very expensive dish, he had repeated it back to him and that it was not his fault. Incidentally the item ordered I can't repeat because it was a very long German word that neither one of us could have possibly said to the waiter. We said he had confirmed two schnitzel dinners, he said we were wrong, but he took the dish back. The schnitzel showed up in 5 minutes. I can say that the food was good, however at the prices, I expect at least some level of politeness from the staff. It was an unfortunate way to start our stay in Switzerland off. I would not recommend this restaurant. Go to the Rugenbrau brewery restaurant instead, fabulous staff, excellent food, good prices, walking distance from Wilderswil.

Wow
They put on a really enjoyable evening, lovely food, music, dancing, a smorgasbord of sweets and the traditional Baeren finale of the Cow bell ringers to welcome the new year. The new owner knows how to throw a party. Yes it was worth it, but at the price I wont be doing it again!
