“We had camels!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2010

Lovely site in the heart of the Swiss mountains. Very clean. Up a quite steep 2km hill from Susten village where the nearest supermarket is. Restaurant well known in the area and used by locals not just the camp - this meant it was quite expensive but the food was very good and portions a good size - the ice creams were fantastic. Also good beer! Some nice walking in the area - the Bhutanese Bridge well worth a look!
We went in September and camp shop had hardly anything in it but you could order fresh bread daily for the following morning - if you didn't order any you didn't get any! Staff all very pleasant especially the waitress in the restaurant.

There is a riding stables at the bottom of the camp - one night 6 horses and 2 camels escaped into the camp - we thought we had been drinking a little too much but there really were camels!

We stayed at Bella Tolla via a booking with Eurocamp in 2 bed superior accomodation with decking. Absolutely beautiful scenery surounding the campsite, awe inspiring. Generally a quiet feel to campsite, nice to sit outside at night when children tucked up. Mobile homes are a little bit close to each other but didn't feel intrusive - everyones in same boat. Great pool, with dive board that kept children (8 and 6) happy on sunny days. Restaurant served a lovely meal, with friendly staff. A journey to Saas Fee and a trip up to the top in the cable car is well worh the time and the money!

We stayed at this site as a group of eleven for four nights on our way to Lake Garda. Set up a hill in rural Switzerland it’s a good site in very nice part of the world. We stayed in Eurocamp tents, there were tents and cabins provided by other companies, touring caravans and quite a few private permanent mobile homes. Facilities includes a good pool, café and restaurant plus a shop. Toilet facilities were OK. You are surrounded mountains which make a great view. Our pitch was in a section down a steep hill and you did need a run up to make it safely to the top, there were touring caravans down there as well and I wouldn’t fancy trying to pull one back up (new clutch sir ?). On our third day it rained, heavily, four hours and hours and some people were washed out. We found the Euro camp reps to be excellent who were very knowledgeable about the local area.

Lots to do around the area. We visited the underground lake at Saint-Léonard, the castle on a hill at Sion, the open air thermal pool complex at Brigerbad which has several hot pools plus a large swimming pool and pool where you can jump/dive from a rocky outcrop, an awesome slide and the fiercest rapids I have ever seen in my life ! We also went up the mountain at Saas Fee. Saas Fee town is an hours drive out of the valley where you park the car in the car park at the entrance as no vehicles (except the local electric small vans) are allowed in the town. We took the two cable cars and funicular railway to the top of the mountain at 12,000 feet where there is a good revolving restaurant. This would have given a fantastic view had it now been shrouded in fog. However, there was very deep snow which made an interesting day out in August. There are also ice caverns cut into the deep ice at the peak with various tunnels and exhibits.

You can use the site as a base for walking/hiking – there are several routes behind the site and a twenty minute walk to a rope bridge (well, it was steel ropes) across a gorge cut out by the rain. Also note, the route from the valley up to the site can be a misleading as it's little rough – but bear with it.

We stayed at Bella Tola in a Keycamp mobile home. The campsite is of a medium size (250 pitches), and the pictches I saw were not badly sized, although I imagine it could be more cramped if every pitch is used at high season. There is a good sized pool (c.30mx10m) on site, with a smaller children's paddling pool alongside, although they are not heated and so not great to be used out of the warm season (we braved it for one day in a coolish September week). There is also a reasonable priced (for Switzerland) restaurant on site, shop (limited opening hours out of high season, fresh bread available daily), kiosk and reception, all with helpful staff.

The campsite enjoys spectacular reviews over the other side of the valley and is well placed for walks in the surrounding countryside. As access to the campsite is up a hill (about a mile from the main road at the bottom of the valley) and the site itself is up a mountain, its not for casual cyclists unused to developing their calf muscles, although its well suited for mountain biking enthusaists. There are many hikes for all sorts of abilities available from the campsite and in the local area. With a car, or even without a car (as long as you don't mind the walk up the hill back from the train station) there are many things to do within the area to appeal to all sorts of interests.

I did not use the onsite bathroom facilities because I was in a static caravan but they appeared of decent quality. There are a fairly large number of privately owned static caravans which I interpreted as testament to the enduring appeal of the place.

  • Liked — The views were spectacular
  • Disliked — The pool was disappointingly cool in mid September
