“Mostly good, could be great”

We were able to book a triple family room, and view was absolutely amazing! It's definitely worth paying the bit extra for a 'sea view' room - you not only get the sea, you get the beautiful North Devon hills and amazing sunrises too!

The parking is adequate and the gardens are beautifully kept. The room and bathroom were spacious and immaculately clean, and the power shower was brilliant (I gather not all rooms have a power shower yet, so ask when you book). We loved the automatic movement-sensing nightlight in the bathroom, so you didn't need to wake anyone with the main light and extractor noise. The beds were wonderfully comfortable.

The food was a bit hit-and-miss, but mostly good. There were some apparent staffing problems whilst we were there, resulting in one disappointing evening meal with long delays and inferior food, and one disappointing breakfast with several items 'run out'. It would have been nice to have been given an explanation and apology, instead of being left to guess what was going on! But we can see that the 'normal' standard of food is very good, so would judge by our better experiences. The 'sticky toffee pudding' and the cooked breakfasts are particularly good.

The hotel is right near the coast path, so you can have some lovely walks without using the car to get anywhere. The 'secret' cove, 5 minutes walk from the hotel (and 238 steps down!) is worth the effort - it was just lovely.

Now the niggles that prevented an 'excellent' rating... No biscuits were provided on tea tray in the room, and no complimentary bottled water (we've always had these in similar rated hotels). No fresh fruit at breakfast (only prunes and grapefruit segments), and not much choice of 'continental' breakfast items. The steam room and sauna in the swimming pool complex weren't working properly when we tried.

It seems like a few small economies are being made by the hotel, but I wonder if it's worth it when the overall impression could be amazing with those special touches included.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room in the newly refurbished part of the hotel, and check you're getting a p...

Sandy Cove hotel.... Where do I start?! I've stayed at Sandy Cove many times over the years and it never disappoints. In fact it actually gets better. With recent renovation work the new rooms are fabulous, the dining experience and food is superb and the view, ever changing with the seasons is to die for.
The area itself is a warren of undiscovered coves and beaches, of which only the locals would know. But when we asked the staff about any secret spots, they were only too happy to point out these little known gems on the North Devon Coast. Now they are a must on every visit!
I'm actually planning my return visit this summer.
As I've said, I've had many a happy stay here over the years, and there are many more to come, I'm sure!

My husband and I stayed here with our dog for one night, on the way to a week long break further south in Devon. The hotel really has the most stunning views, we cannot fault the location and was probably worth staying for that alone, because if it didn't have the view, the hotel would have been very disappointing. On booking, through 'Booking.com' I requested a quiet room because if the dog hears a noise, of course he is likely to bark! I also paid extra for the seaview. Our room was on the ground floor, next to Reception, and next to the door for residents to come and go to their rooms which did not close quietly by itself, rather banged every time - you could also hear the residents talking and laughing as they came and went. Also, being on the ground floor the dog could see everyone walking by...as it is natural instinct for protecting his 'space' he invariably barked at everyone who went by the window. Maybe an ideal spot for some dogs, but not mine. I also picked this hotel because you could have breakfast in the room, much easier with having a dog. However, this was virtually impossible because there was only a small dressing table which already had things on it, including a paint splattered information book! My husband did manage to have a cooked breakfast, and I have to say the staff in the restaurant were great, very helpful and polite, but it wasn't a great situation balancing a plate on your knee! We ate out in Ilfracombe on the evening as the set meal was £35 each which was a little steep for us. I felt the hotel lacked a bit of 'attention to detail' - I didn't feel the room was as clean as it could have been - but maybe that doesn't matter if you have a dog? (for which you pay extra for cleaning!!!) - benches in the grounds could have done with wood staining, and quite a few weeds among the flower beds too - but I am just being hyper critical. I would have given this property a higher rating, but didn't think it was 'very good' - more 'good'.

Room Tip: I wouldn't say this is a 'dog friendly' hotel, but dogs are tolerated.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we're really glad you loved the location. We do only allow dogs in our standard rooms and we are a very busy hotel and so there will always be people walking past whichever room it is in the hotel so we are sorry if this did make your dog bark. The majority of people who bring their dogs do have breakfast in the restaurant and their dogs are fine. We are glad you found the staff friendly and helpful and will pass this on to them, both the Restaurant Manager and Assistant Manager have now been with us over 10 years. Although the 4 course a la carte menu is priced at £35, you do not have to take all courses and we do also have a lovely bar menu which you can also choose from. If you do want to come again and ring the hotel direct, we often have special offers on which include the dinner. We do have a full time gardener and normally have very good comments on the upkeep of the garden so we are very sorry if you found anything not to your liking. We do hope you will stay again in the future.

We chose this hotel for a last minute short break. The location is stunning with fantastic views. There is ample car parking. All the staff were very friendly and helpful especially the dining room team. The family room was very spacious with a separate children's room and fabulous view. The room was clean and appeared recently refurbished with a great bathroom and power shower. There is an automatic night light that comes on in the bathroom so you don't risk waking the family up with the full light/fan. The evening food was reasonable but I feel would have been over priced if it hadn't been included in our offer of bed/breakfast/dinner. Breakfast was good. It was easy to get to local sandy beaches with a short drive. The beach closest to the hotel is more stoney and accessed down a long flight of steep steps. Overall an enjoyable, great value stay in an excellent location.

Me and my husband got married here 5 years ago and it was so amazing the food was superb couldn't fault anything ---this year we decided to return for our anniversary, as well as the restaurant looked amazing after a re vamp, the receptionist when we arrived was amazing we remembered her from our wedding a credit to the hotel , as for the menu we opt to book a table for the al a carte menu the good was really bland no flavour at all as well as our starters being a while was then told my starter was the last one and it was dropped by accident which was fine these things happen can't be helped the receptionist came and explained this and I chose something else she said she wouldn't charge us for both starters which we ok I was fine about that the main meal was ok the duck was tasty bug that was due to the sauce around it, as for the dessert when j looked at the menu in reception it said there was brownie but when it came to order that wasn't on the menu that was last nights menu was what the waitress said I just opted for ice cream when they turned up I got a side plate with two balls of ice cream and some crushed up stuff on the side it looked awful the presentation was bad I work in a hotel and I would never serve ice cream on a plate , when we came to check out we were told that we were only being charged for one starter when I told her what had happened and that the lady came over to tell us and said we would not be charged for both she wasn't very helpful at all ..... I would stay here again but I would chose not to eat here it's a beautiful place to stay lovely location and views and the kitchen shouldn't change that

The Room appeared to be newly refurbished and plenty of room.It was very comfy room The view and location was lovely... inside and out. As this was on the ground floor, everybody walked passed with their dogs via a fire exit which always seemed to be left open day and night., This room needed a form of net curtain to make it private, The Service in the dining room was appalling, It took two hours to serve three courses on more than one occasion, to which I complained to staff about. No routine seemed in place, all either going to the same tables for removal of plates but not taking orders. Spillages on the floor not wiped up, when pointed out to staff. The food although good, repeated each night, as the chef had recently left, all food listed on the menu was not available as nobody had done a stock of what was in before setting up the menu for the day. Had to call reception out of hours due to a leak from the room above, which was coming through light fittings, took 4 attempts and a good 5 minutes to answer, to be told to put a bin under it. nobody came to check it for for at least 3 hours after reporting this no apologies given.

Room Tip: avoid ground level rooms on far side where people can walk right by picture window and look right in...

My family and I had an amazing weekend stay at Sandy Cove. The rooms were great value with the added bonus of a great view. The staff were really friendly and knowledgable about the activities in the local area. The food was of a very high standard and the kids food was outstanding. Can't wait to come back in the autumn.
